Save Our stylo

stylo starr is a pillar in the Hamilton art scene and beyond. If you have walked the streets, been to an art crawl or bought from local artists in Hamilton – you know of stylo and her hand cut collage work.

As an independent artist, stylo has made huge strides and a huge impact with her work centering nature, fantasy, and the Afrofuture. Her upcoming projects include an installation at Supercrawl, Mapleview mall, cover work for Annick Press and an upcoming tarot deck of hand cut collages. stylo’s work is unparalleled.

Unfortunately, ongoing pest infestations – of which building management and the city of Hamilton have not dealt with for at least the last three years – have made her work and living space almost impossible to operate or thrive in. stylo needs to pack up her home and studio within the next week for the first round of fumigation.

With upcoming projects and contracts already in place stylo is in urgent need of community support to protect her collection of paper supplies and archive of work from infestation so that she can continue her artistic practice, as well as the resources to be able to rest. We are asking to support a community member who has contributed so much to the arts and culture of a city, helping uplift Black artists, and made time-line changing impacts to collaging as a medium.

stylo is currently in need of immediate support to:

• Pay rent + cover other costs of living while fumigation is taking place

• Buy supplies to pack up her home + studio for fumigation

• Cover laundry costs + cleaning

• Replacing archive of paper

• Replace furniture that was infested

• Additional living expenses (pet care, etc)
