Save Our Home from the HOA

Donation protected
We have lived in our home in Yacht Cove for over 15 years and are very involved in the community. I serve as the administrator of the neighborhood Facebook group and Dave volunteers his time to help the community with laborious projects (as shown in our cover photo). Amenities such as access to a pool and the lake are very important for maintaining my physical and mental health. Services provided by the HOA make living with my disability much easier. Our fees are a little higher than most of the neighborhood because our unit is large. I use the bottom floor of our large unit to work from home (an equivalent commercial space would cost around $1,500 per month), so losing our home would also be losing my business. The mortgage on our home is low and, considering what I've mentioned above, our HOA fee is reasonable for the return we get.

As you may know, I have been recovering from anemia for over a year and suffered a concussion in May. These medical events have made it very difficult to work as much as I need to and I am still able to do very little. The lack of income from J. Cottage and The Apothecary, in addition to some other unexpected events, has made it difficult to make ends to meet. During this time, we fell behind on our HOA fees, but paid as much as we could each month.

Although we are currently less than two months behind (our governing documents state that a lien is placed when two months are owed), the HOA has placed a lien on our home and is threatening foreclosure at the end of June if we do not pay a $650 balance in full (foreclosure over $115 owed in "Month 2" is ridiculous). We have been given one week's notice to make this payment. We will also have a payment of $535 due in July that we will struggle to pay, which will make a legitimate foreclosure difficult to fight.

Our parents have given us help over the past few months, and we feel we cannot ask for more than they have already given. We are so grateful for their generosity. We hope that you will consider donating to our fundraiser, helping us keep our home and my business.

We have built up a lot of karma in the form of charitable donations by my businesses and Dave's willingness to help our community in many ways. Fingers crossed karma does her thing this week!

Sincerely,
Jen & Dave
