I’m writing this as a parent regarding a sensitive issue which I believe you all need to be aware of. Last year was a banner year for the Capital TEAM and especially the Varsity Men! We moved Capital Crew to a Nationally Recognized Team and a force to be reckoned with! Just a few statistics that I am super proud of:
· The VM raised enough money to purchase The Hunter on top of our continued support of the Boosters!
· We qualified the most boats for Nationals in the Region! We went from one boat at Nationals in 2017 to THREE BOATSrepresenting Capital VM this year!
· Last year we had one athlete recruited for a Club Nationals Camp. This year we had TWELVE; with NINE athletes attending Camps across the Nation!
· 11 VM Seniors were recruited to top schools across the country!
Ben Hise has done a phenomenal job coaching and motivating our boys. He has built a platform for success that we can be proud of. Also as a Mom, I can’t underestimate the life skills and confidence that he instills in these boys!
We are not the only one who has noticed! Ben has been formally offered a head coaching position from one of our closest competitors. We cannot let him go without a fight! Our boys need his motivation, leadership, knowledge, and the continuity he brings to our program.
Ben wants to stay at Capital. He is proud of what he has accomplished with our athletes. In order to keep doing this he will need to find an additional job to supplement what he makes at the Aquatic Center. Let me just say, his salary is not competitive. (His salary is more in line with a student income, not an adult man who doesn’t want to live with his family.) Unfortunately, his salary is constrained by rules in place at Sac State. He is getting his real estate license and is exploring some other options to allow him to earn additional income and still be able to “pursue his passion of coaching junior rowing at Capital”.
I asked him to please give us the chance to help bridge the gap between his pay structure and the offers on the table. We all know the many hours on and off the water that Ben commits to our boys.
The bottom line: I am hoping each family could donate to help off-set the outside offers Ben has already received. Of course anything you can do is appreciated, but I am hoping for approximately $300-500 per athlete (We need to raise around $25,000, which I know is a lot of money. Remember: This donation is tax-deductible!). I commit that this is a one-time deal, just a chance to level the field a little and give Ben the time he needs supplement his coaching income.
We have all invested a lot of money and time into the program that I feel will be wasted if we can’t keep Ben Hise! Let’s not have that be in vain by losing our Coach!
