I adopted Oriole as a 3rd chance rescue. Last year he was diagnosed with a congenital liver shunt which we have treated medically and he has been so healthy and amazing. He runs and plays and eats his food and bites his brothers and just loves life and loves to cuddle. On Saturday, 5/18 he started exhibiting symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy so I took him to the emergency vet. The doctor on staff wanted to do an ultrasound on his spleen, I opted to send him home with sub cutaneous fluids as I don’t think his spleen is related. I held him all night and he slept comfortably. I woke up at 8am and Oriole was sitting in the corner of my bedroom unresponsive in a pool of drool and urine. I rushed him to the emergency hospital where they began treating him for hepatic encephalopathy. He has been there since, and while stable now and his levels are staying without supplementation. Mid-day Sunday, his right eye suddenly began to swell. They did a pressure test and the pressure was normal. They stained his eye and found a large scratch on his cornea, they began treating it but now the entire right side of his face and jaw is ballooning and they cannot figure out why so we are being transferred to veterinary specialty hospital in sorrento valley. I have exhausted all of my emergency funds and maxed out my credit cards and even taken out loans and just really need help getting to the bottom of what is going on with his face. For any questions please call VCA mission animal and bird hospital, we are now on our way to Sorrento Valley and I haven’t seen an estimate from them yet but I’m sure they will need to hospitalize him. I have photos of what is going on but it is extremely graphic.
