Save On Street Bar: A Koh Samui Community Treasure

Donation protected

Hello everyone,

My name is Les Treacy, and I’m reaching out on behalf of my lifelong friends, Mor and his wife, Jim—the heart and soul behind On Street Bar Samui. Since 2012, they’ve poured their hearts into building one of the most unique and beloved bars in Chaweng, Koh Samui—a place countless reviewers describe as the “best bar on the island” and “the place of friendship.

Existing Bar Closing Its Doors on February 26, 2025

With deep sadness, Mor & Jim recently announced that On Street Bar Samui will officially close at its current location on February 26, 2025. After more than a decade of nightly gatherings, heartfelt music performances, and cherished community moments, the bar as we know it will shut its doors for good. Although this is a heartbreaking moment for Mor, Jim, and countless friends worldwide, I believe the spirit of On Street can live on—with a helping hand.

Why On Street Bar Samui Needs Your Help

A recent 200% rent increase (with only 4 weeks’ notice), rezoning of their street parking to now No Standing, forced sharing of their toilet with other nearby tenants, and other site challenges have left Mor and Jim unable to continue at the current premises. While the final day is set for February 26, they’ve identified a number of new possible locations where they can rebuild the same friendly atmosphere, live music, and vibrant art.

Time is short: to secure that new location and cover relocation costs, renovations, and initial rent, Jim & Mor need your support now. This is why I'm asking, through this crowdfunding campaign, On Street Bar's amazing community of friends, travelers, and supporters to help raise THB 300,000 (A$ 14,000) so Mor and Jim can reopen once the old doors close.

What Makes On Street Bar Samui Special?

  • A One-of-a-Kind Vibe: Featured by Phanganist .com , On Street Bar is described as “the most original venue in Chaweng’s enormous nightlife scene.” From reclaimed wood and corrugated iron to daily-changing art, it’s an unpolished gem where you can grab a drink, meet new people, and enjoy an authentic, laid-back Thai nightlife experience.
  • Live Music & Artistic Flair: According to TripAdvisor , visitors adore the Wednesday and Saturday live music sessions from 10:00pm–1:00am. Mor’s creative spirit touches every corner—his ever-evolving art displays infuse the bar with a vibrant, welcoming energy that keeps people coming back.
  • Community & Friendships: So many reviews mention how welcoming and genuinely friendly Mor and Jim are. Tourists, expats, and locals all feel like family the moment they walk in. People rave about the “rainbow shots,” the “best Mojitos” on the island, and the deep sense of camaraderie that arises every night.
  • Affordable & Authentic: While upscale clubs and resorts dominate Chaweng, On Street Bar remains a budget-friendly, no-frills alternative that embodies the true island spirit—plus, the drinks are both delicious and easy on your wallet!

On Street Bar’s 10-Year Commitment to Community Aid

For the past 10 years, Mor and Jim used a portion of On Street Bar’s profits—and their own funds—to support local charitable causes. They’ve proudly sponsored:

  • Meals4Smiles Koh Samui – Providing nourishing meals to vulnerable individuals.
  • Give Love Koh Samui – Offering assistance to families and communities across the island.
  • Hospital Feeding Projects – Supporting patients and medical staff with much-needed meals.
  • Samui Special Needs School project – Helping children with special needs receive educational support and resources.

This legacy of giving is at risk if the bar can’t reopen. By helping them relocate, you also help Mor and Jim continue supporting Koh Samui’s most vulnerable.

What the Funds Will Cover

  • Lease Deposit & Initial Rent – Ensuring Mor and Jim can secure the new location without financial strain.
  • Renovations & Setup – Moving the bar’s unique décor, equipment, and instruments to the new space, along with any repairs or upgrades to preserve that beloved On Street Bar ambiance.
  • Licenses & Permits – Covering the legalities required to operate in a new spot.
  • Support for Staff – Making sure the small team can stay employed during the transition.

Why This Matters

In the words of Mor:

“We never imagined having to say goodbye to our bar this way. We hope to create a new home where people can come as strangers and leave as friends—just like before.”

On Street Bar is not just a place to drink—it’s a community hub. If you’ve been lucky enough to visit, you’ve likely experienced Mor’s contagious warmth, Jim’s skillful cocktail artistry, and a crowd of strangers who quickly become friends. People travel from all over the world and leave with unforgettable memories, new friendships, and a desire to return. As one reviewer said, it’s a place where you can “walk in for a cocktail, and walk out with a whole new perspective on life!

As we face its final night on February 26, your donation can help ensure the On Street spirit continues in a new venue.

How You Can Help

  • Donate Whatever You Can: Every bit helps—whether it’s $2 or $200. With closing day fast approaching, every donation counts.
  • Share This Campaign: Spread the word online or in-person—friends, fellow travelers, social groups—anyone who appreciates genuine island hospitality might want to help.
  • Send Encouragement: Kind words on social media or a heartfelt message can do wonders for Mor and Jim as they navigate this emotional farewell.

What the Future Could Look Like

With the current bar closing on February 26, Mor and Jim will form a new venture to preserve the On Street spirit—but its shape depends on how much is ultimately raised:

  • THB 100,000 (A$4,666): A small café kiosk, selling items like sticky rice with mango and basic refreshments (beer, water, soft drinks). Simple but impactful—a modest start for big dreams.

  • THB 200,000 (A$9,333): A larger shop with cocktails and an atmosphere closer to the original bar—still intimate, still friendly.

  • THB 300,000 (A$14,000): A mid-scale business—better equipped than any downsized version, bringing back much of the beloved ambiance regulars fondly remember.

  • Above THB 300,000+ (A$14,000+): An opportunity to fully recreate the vibrant, live music venue and cocktail scene that made On Street Bar a standout. Possibly bigger, with an even stronger community focus.

Regardless of total funds, every donation helps Mor and Jim reopen and keep the On Street feeling alive.

Why This Campaign is Under My GoFundMe Account

You may wonder why this GoFundMe campaign is under my account rather than Mor and Jim’s. While crowdfunding platforms in Thailand do exist for local individuals and businesses, they have limited global reach and donation options, making it harder for their international community of supporters to contribute. Hosting the campaign here ensures maximum accessibility for their global friends, fans, and visitors who want to help.

I also want to strongly guarantee to all donors that every single cent raised will be promptly remitted in full to Mor and Jim’s Thai bank account to support their relocation and continued success.

A Special Note About Fees

My wife, Mint, and I pledge to cover all GoFundMe transaction fees, ensuring that 100% of your kind donations go directly to Mor and Jim.

Thank You from the Bottom of Our Hearts

Mor and Jim always say On Street Bar isn’t just a business—it’s “a place of friendship.” From locals who visit nightly, to jet-setters popping in for a weekend, On Street Bar Samui proves how a simple, unpretentious bar can bring people together and give back to the island they love.

As the February 26 closing date approaches, we’re reminded of how many laughs, stories, and friendships were born at On Street Bar. Together, let’s make sure this legacy doesn’t end—let’s help close one door and open another, so that the On Street community can keep thriving.

With gratitude and hopeful hearts,

Les Treacy
(Friend & Devoted Supporter of On Street Bar Samui since 2012)
