Help Save Ollie – Emergency Veterinary Care for Our Tiny Fighter

Over the past days, our sweet dog Ollie became very sick and had to be rushed for emergency veterinary care. He is currently hospitalized at VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital, where he has been under constant monitoring since Thursday.

After several tests and a CT scan, the doctors were able to confirm the cause of his condition: Ollie has a liver shunt, a serious condition where blood bypasses the liver instead of being properly filtered. Without treatment, toxins build up in the body and can become life-threatening.

The CT scan and hospitalization alone have already brought the medical bill to around $7,500, and we have already paid a $3,200 deposit to begin his care.

Ollie now needs specialized surgery to correct the shunt, and the current estimate for the procedure is between $6,900 and $7,500.

Before surgery can be performed, the veterinary team is working to stabilize Ollie’s condition.

His red blood cell count has dropped to 21%, which means he may require a red blood cell transfusion if the levels continue to decrease. He also has very low blood protein levels (1.5), which normally help keep fluids inside the blood vessels, so he may need a plasma transfusion to stabilize him.

In addition, Ollie’s white blood cell count is elevated, so he is currently receiving antibiotics while the doctors monitor for infection or inflammation.

The veterinary team plans to recheck his blood levels on Tuesday. If his condition stabilizes, the goal is to move forward with surgery later this week or possibly next week.

Even after surgery, recovery takes time. It can take around two weeks for the body to begin adjusting, and Ollie may need additional treatments and follow-up visits during that process.

Between hospitalization, diagnostic tests, transfusions, surgery, and follow-up care, we are expecting the total cost of Ollie’s treatment to reach approximately $13,000–$15,000.

This has been incredibly overwhelming for us, but Ollie means the world to our family and we are doing everything we can to give him a chance to recover.
