Save Ocean From Slaughter

Donation protected
My name is Bridgit and I am fundraising towards my startup nonprofit, Bridging Unicorns, around our key 2022-2023 milestones ---
(1) Rescuing Ocean from slaughter
(2) Maintaining him in the Bridging Unicorns rescue herd
(3) Supporting our horse-human healing programs in the areas of youth leadership and grief work/hospice care

OUR MISSION
We rescue and rehabilitate horses from the slaughter pipeline, facilitate individual and group programming that supports human-horse healing and development alongside rescued horses, and raise awareness around the inhumane horse slaughter industry.

HOW WE DO THIS
We do this through individual rescues of wild and domestic horses from the slaughter pipeline, the funding of rescue projects, and building education and awareness in local and nonlocal communities. We rehabilitate these horses in a symbiotic relationship with the community through individual and group programs that promote horse-human healing with a focus on the areas of youth leadership, grief and hospice work, and the arts.

Ocean

I first met him on the first of several visits in March 2022 to a kill pen in Eaton Colorado, which is a horse meat company that keeps the horses before they ship to Canada or Mexico under inhumane conditions to be killed. He was set to ship on Friday April 8, 2022 to slaughter.

Horribly, this is a trip he would likely not survive due to his instability from unshod hooves in a packed cattle car with fighting horses. He is 18 years old and has an exceptionally kind and open hearted temperament despite the abuse he has suffered. He had been left without vet and farrier care, grooming, or basic dietary needs and his front hooves were so overgrown he could barely walk.

The initial two visits we spent a long time together, usually me sitting alongside him as he lay in the mud for hours stroking his body as he sighed. His open heart and deep, generous wisdom, amidst it all, combined with my own grief over his circumstances, was a sparking force that helped to bring this project forward at this time. Amidst all 30 horses in the pen who shipped, I decided I was unwilling to allow him to limp onto the truck and then likely die by trampling in the cattle car.

Ocean's rescue in early April 2022 about restoring dignity to elders and breaking cycles of extreme neglect. He is recovering quickly, uncovering a warm, deeply kind, and even feisty personality. He has a lot to teach us about compassion and love amidst great suffering and is an amazing first member of the Bridging Unicorns herd.

I personally funded this first rescue and as I establish the infrastructure for Bridging Unicorns your support is greatly appreciated towards our first milestones. Since being rescued, we have learned he has a deep injury in his left front that will need further imaging and support for healing, Cushings disease (Adrenal Issues), and Arthritis. As a high needs older horse, the costs are higher to tend to his health issues. The great news --- in the initial weeks of hum being on medication, he has come alive and transformed from barely being able to walk and being in a state of extreme depletion to trotting around and full of an aliveness I did not know was possible.
And - this is just the beginning of his recovery journey. Yay, Ocean!

More on how your donations help!

Your donations will support Ocean and Delray's rescue from the slaughter pipeline and kickstart our 2022-2023 youth and grief work programs.

Please see our website for more information on horse-human healing and development programs taking place alongside our rescues this summer!

The costs and implications of rescuing slaughter-bound horses are steep --- AND the power of community engagement of the rehabilitation process is enormous.

I alongside my team are excited to begin with these milestones and set the foundation for future rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming to come.
