I tried to do this on my own, as I think it's my responsibility as a pet owner, but the bills are starting to stack up. I'm running out of options to pay the animal hospital while Nymeria is slowly recovering.
About a month ago, I took Nymeria to the hospital for balance issues. She seemed to be falling a lot, and her head was tilted to the left all the time. It was cute, but I was worried. The vet first wanted to rule out an inner ear infection, so she sent us home with an antibiotic and an ointment to put in her eye because she was not fully blinking. This visit cost $343.13. I could handle that.
Nymeria finished the meds and continued to stumble, so I took the next step, which was an evaluation with a neurologist. Last week, the doctor examined her and said that Nymeria was not responding fully to stimuli on one side of her face and that she was going to run some bloodwork to see if there was a thyroid issue and if there was not, then we'd have to move on to an MRI. That visit cost $957.50. I threw it on a credit card.
The thyroid tests all came back fine, so yesterday, I dropped Nymeria off at 8:30 am for her MRI. At this time, I had to put down a $2,600 deposit. I paid $1,400 in cash that I had saved over the summer from doing overtime. I also applied for a Care Credit card and put $1,200 on that.
Another doctor called around 5 pm and said that he didn't see anything significantly wrong on the MRI but that we'd have to wait for the neurologist to read the results thoroughly. He said they tried to take a spinal tap, but that was unsuccessful, and to give Nymeria another 30 minutes to wake up before I head over. I did that. They charged me an additional $576.75. I put that on my credit card.
I sat there for half an hour, and then someone came out and told me Nymeria was having a little trouble waking up, so we would wait 30 more minutes. Two hours later, a vet came out to say it was still taking longer than expected and just to go home and come back in a couple hours. So I went home, and when I hadn't heard from them in two hours, I called. They said she was still having trouble waking up and wanted to keep her overnight and start her on some fluids.
This morning, I called at 7 am, and they said the doctors were making their rounds and would call me when they were done. Two hours later, I heard nothing, so I called again, and they told me the same thing. Finally, at 11 am, the neurologist called me. She said Nymeria is having trouble walking, and they have to use a sling to help her. She's unsure if it was from the unsuccessful spinal tap or an underlying brain problem. She's now being treated with two antibiotics for any possible swelling and brain infection. They want to keep her another day.
This wait has been excruciating. Nymeria has been everywhere with me and everything for me. She was there, at the house, when Betsy died. She was there when I found out. She went with me across the United States and Canada. She has met and touched more people than most of you will meet in your lifetime, and she's only five years old.
At this point, my total spent is $4,477.38. I want to take care of it myself and be responsible, but I'm struggling here and need some help. I'm not asking for help with that total, but with a little to put towards whatever is coming next. I have no idea what I'm going to have to pay tomorrow when I hopefully get to bring her home or what I'll have to pay for treatment after that. PLEASE HELP ME SAVE NYMERIA!
