A Nation in Crisis: The Devastation Unfolds
Last Friday, 28 March, 2025, a catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Myanmar’s second-largest city, leaving behind unimaginable destruction.
As of Wednesday, April 2, 2025, the following figures have been recorded officially:
- 3,003 lives lost
- 4,521 injured
- 441 missing
- Approximately 3 million people displaced from their homes
It is estimated that the actual death toll could reach to 10,000.
The video below features an interview with Dr. Kyi Minn, the Director of World Vision International Myanmar and a member of the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health.
Entire communities have been reduced to rubble. Families have lost everything–their homes, their loved ones, their future. Survivors are now struggling to find shelter, food, clean water, and medical aid.
As if the human toll weren’t devastating enough, this disaster has also ravaged Myanmar’s rich cultural heritage. Ancient temples and centuries-old historical sites–irreplaceable symbols of our identity–lie in ruins. The loss is both human and historical, and the road to recovery will be long and painful.
Though my family in Yangon is safe, as a son of Myanmar, my heart aches for my home country. This is not just a distant tragedy; it is deeply personal. Myanmar, my homeland where I grew up, is now in its greatest time of need.
