Help Save The Mount – A Message to Parents, Alumni, and Supporters of the School

Dear Parents, Alumni, and Supporters of The Mount and Barlborough Hall,

Thank you for all the support, ideas, and encouragement shared over the past 24 hours. We are parents who never expected to find ourselves in this position—fighting for the future of a school that means so much to our children, families, and community.

We’ve met with members of the school’s finance team and governors, and we believe there is a clear path forward to place the school on stronger, more sustainable financial footing. Crucially, The Mount is not yet in administration, which means there is still time—but we must act urgently.

Why We Need Your Help – and Why Now

The school is currently facing an immediate cash flow crisis:
  • Repayments on a loan from the Jesuits have been missed.
  • Salaries for July remain unpaid, with £300,000 owed to staff.
  • HMRC is also owed funds.

Without immediate financial support, there is a risk that the school will be forced to close and unable to open in September. However, we believe the school has a viable future – if we can buy some crucial time.

The school’s Autumn term fee income will significantly improve cash flow, and a recovery plan is already in motion. However, there’s an urgent short-term gap that can’t be filled by bringing forward term fees alone.

The Goal

We are urgently seeking to raise £800,000–£1 million by 5pm on Tuesday. This will:
  • Pay outstanding staff salaries
  • Settle pressing obligations with HMRC and creditors
  • Provide a small working capital buffer
  • Give time for the long-term recovery plan to take root.

This equates to roughly £2,000 per pupil, though we know not everyone can give this amount. Any contribution—large or small—will make a difference.

How You Can Help

We have launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise the necessary funds.

If we don’t reach the fundraising target, all donations will be returned.
If pupil numbers for September fall below 80% of current students, the plan will not be viable and donations will be returned.
If further work on the business plan deems the future unviable, donations will be returned.

We are taking every precaution to ensure that no money will be used unless there is a clear, deliverable plan and a secure future for the school.

We are choosing GoFundMe because:
  • Time is short—we cannot set up a new company and bank account in time
  • We do not want donations going directly to the school without guarantees
  • The platform offers transparency and accountability

Why This Matters

We understand there have been concerns about the governance of the school. While changes to the board cannot be made immediately, many governors have expressed a willingness to step aside in due course. In the meantime, we are working with those who are committed to supporting a path forward.

A School Worth Saving

We are confident the school can thrive with the right leadership and financial support. It has a strong community, passionate parents, dedicated staff, and a legacy worth preserving.

We’re asking for your help—whether you're a parent, an Old Mountaineer, a local supporter, or someone who simply believes in the power of independent education and strong communities.

If you’re not in a position to give financially, please help us by sharing this appeal widely. The more people who hear our story, the better chance we have of reaching our goal.

We’re being open and honest in this letter because that’s what the situation demands. If anyone has other viable ideas or financial solutions that can be executed today, we’re open to all suggestions.

Together, we believe we can save our school.

Thank you for standing with us.
