Help Save Morgan Valley from a Proposed Gas Power Plant
A large natural gas power plant is proposed near Highway 30 and Linn-Benton
Road in Iowa threatening communities across our region. This plant is destined
to support data centers in the midst of valuable agricultural land. This plant
impacts our land, our health, our water, utility rates and our way of life.
EVERY ACTION MATTERS! WHEN WE ORGANIZE, WE CAN WIN!
Who is Affected:
● This isn't just about one location. It’s about the health and future of our
entire region.
● The proposed site sits dangerously close to residential areas:
Under 3 miles: Atkins, Cedar Rapids, Fairfax
3-5 miles: Covington, Walford
5+ miles: Hiawatha, Newhall, Norway, Palo, Shellsburg, Watkins
● According to the State of Iowa, the site impact area covers a 10-mile
radius around the proposed plant affecting a large portion of both Linn and
Benton Counties. That means tens of thousands of families, schools,
parks, and farms would be exposed to industrial emissions daily.
Why This Matters:
This plant raises concerns about our families’ health, property values, and quality
of life.
● It would emit air pollutants associated with asthma, cancer risk, and
respiratory issues, especially for children and elderly residents.
● Rural Iowa communities already have higher cancer rates and this plant
will degrade our health further.
● The availability of water for residents will be affected.
● It will create continuous noise and bright night time lighting affecting
humans and animals
● Local rate payors will shoulder the cost burden and pay higher rates
due to a plant that benefits big tech, out of state billionaire businesses
● Industrial proximity can impact home values
● Located on prime agricultural land and once the land is developed it is
gone permanently.
● Communities deserve clean air, and access to clean water.
● WE HAVE A VOICE IN DECISIONS THAT AFFECT OUR QUALITY OF
LIFE AND OUR FUTURE!
How Your Donation Helps:
We're organizing grassroots efforts to oppose this project, but we need your
support to:
● Print petition materials, flyers, and informational handouts
● Purchase yard signs and banners to raise awareness
● Cover legal fees for representation at public hearings and regulatory
proceedings
Every dollar counts. Whether it's $10 or $100, your contribution helps us amplify our
community's voice.
Unused Funds:
If we raise more than needed or the project is stopped before funds are fully used, any
remaining money will be donated to related causes such as the Environment Defense
Fund.

Some additional information:
Environment: The proposed power plant has all cons and no pros for the community.
Emissions will pollute the air, water and soil, affecting the health of people, animals and
plants and changing the environment forever. Not only will high quality farm land be
taken away, but nearby crop yields will diminish from the pollution. The power plant’s
massive use of water may be sourced from the local aquifer, depleting that resource. A
40-50 mile, high-pressure natural gas pipeline will invade the countryside.
Alarming Fact: Annual CO2 emissions equivalent to 425,000 gas-powered
vehicles!
Economics: It is very likely that power company customers will eventually pay for this
through rate hikes. Other utilities such as natural gas and water demand will increase
drastically from the large power plant and data centers. This project will also lower local
property values. In a time when sustainable practices and renewable energies should
be at the forefront of our development agenda, the planned power plant represents a
step backward, even to the power company’s own ecological goals.
Alarming Fact: Only 6-20 long-term jobs will be created by this power plant!
Quality of Life: Iowa prides itself on its close-knit communities and its commitment to
preserving the land that sustains us. Allowing this development is not just a challenge to
the environment; it's a challenge to our community's values and quality of life. Once this
land is rezoned this area will become a heavy industry hub. We must stand together to
demand that Alliant Energy reconsider this plan, review alternative locations, explore
cleaner, community-beneficial energy solutions that align with Iowa's health,
environmental, and community goals.
Alarming Fact: EPA estimates $342 mil. annually in health and environmental
damages!
