Help Mordecai Get the Life-Saving Surgery He Deserves
Introduction:
Meet Mordecai, a sweet and loving 4-5 month old Cane Corso puppy who has quickly captured the hearts of everyone who’s met him. Mordecai’s life began with a heartbreaking start—he was found abandoned on the side of the road during a winter storm, starving and freezing. My father-in-law spotted a small, moving figure in a ditch, and upon investigation, found Mordecai in a severely weakened state, likely just after suffering a seizure. Since then, he’s been a cherished part of our family, but Mordecai is facing a life-threatening medical condition: a liver shunt.
Mordecai needs life-saving surgery to correct his liver shunt, but without it, his chances of survival are almost non-existent. His condition is worsening daily, and without the surgery, he could be gone within a few months.
The Story of Mordecai:
When Mordecai was found, he was weak, starving, and suffering from seizures. Since being brought into our family, he's been a sweet, snuggly puppy who adores curling up in our arms and falling asleep to the sound of gentle petting. Despite his seizures and weakness, he is playful when he has the energy, and he loves being around the grandchildren, where he is gentle and affectionate.
However, Mordecai’s condition is severe. He suffers from seizures that cause him to freeze, pant heavily, and foam at the mouth, with each episode feeling like it could be the last. These seizures, along with his extreme lethargy and weakness, are all symptoms of a liver shunt—an abnormal blood vessel that bypasses his liver, preventing toxins from being filtered out properly. His prognosis without surgery is dire. The vets have told us that if left untreated, he will most likely succumb to this condition in the next few months.
The Urgency of Surgery:
The good news is that there is a surgery available that can give Mordecai a chance at a full and healthy life. This surgery, called a portosystemic shunt surgery, has an extremely high success rate. It involves closing off the abnormal blood vessel and allowing blood to flow properly through the liver, where it can filter out toxins and prevent the seizures. The surgery is expected to take a few hours, and recovery usually takes a few weeks.
However, without this surgery, Mordecai’s condition will continue to worsen. His symptoms will become more severe, and he will not survive for long. This surgery is the only thing standing between him and a future where he can be a normal, healthy dog.
The Costs:
So far, my in-laws have spent around $3,000 on testing and emergency medical visits for Mordecai. However, the estimated future costs for vet visits, medications, travel expenses to see specialists, ongoing specialized liver diet, and the surgery itself are expected to be between $17,000 and $19,000. We are aiming to raise $19,500 in total to cover these expenses and give Mordecai the life he deserves.
How You Can Help:
We are asking for your help to raise the necessary funds to give Mordecai this life-saving surgery. Every donation will go directly toward his surgery, medications, travel expenses, and the necessary care he needs both before and after the procedure.
The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated. If we don’t raise the funds soon, Mordecai’s condition will continue to worsen, and he may not survive. Every dollar donated gives him a chance at life.
Why Your Help Matters:
Mordecai is so much more than just a puppy in need. He’s a loving, gentle soul who deserves to live a full life. He has already been through so much, and with your support, we can ensure he has the opportunity to grow, play, and snuggle his way through many happy years. The success rate of the surgery is incredibly high, and with your help, we can give Mordecai the healthy future he deserves.
