Hello, my name is Taira Martes and I thank you for taking the time to read my story today.

DISCLAIMER: I cannot reveal anything that may give away my identity, as I am concerned my family or people close to my family may find this and use it against me. I understand it makes my story less credible, but it is a risk I cannot take. Nonetheless, I am open to answering any questions that to provide proof/ transparency.

I used to live in the UK as a student, however due to visa and family issues I was forced to return to my country in Southwest Africa.

I have been trying to go back since October of 2025 however it has proven to be much more difficult than I anticipated. Firstly because my father had several  restrictions in terms of me returning to the UK and has been using this as a way to abuse me ever since.

Secondly, when I was finally able to convince him to let me return, my visa application in December 2025 was rejected due to a technical error on their part. Anyone who knows the UKVI system knows how difficult it is to appeal, even if the rejection was not due to inadequacies or incorrect documents, which is my case.

Nonetheless, I am currently working towards getting a job but in the meantime I need to save as much money as possible, as quickly as possible so I can gain financial independence from the people that control my life and have been negatively affecting my mental health for years.

While classes start in September, I am trying to go back between July and August . Firstly, because this way I can distance myself physically, financially and emotionally from my abusive parents and finally take a breather, but also because I can get a job in Brighton and save up to be able to pay my tuition.

I plan to study education and psychology and later become a clinical psychologist focusing especially on abused individuals and their recovery. My goal is and always has been to help people with their mental health no matter whom they are or where they come from.

I plan on using this money to pay for my visa and education. I know it’s not a long term solution, but however much I am able to make from your kind donations will be going directly towards both processes.

The costs are as follows:
  •  Accommodation: £1450
  • Visa service: £524
  • NHS health surcharge: £2776

Due to these high costs, I am required to ask request a larger amount.

Despite how poorly things have been going and the little support I have, I am still hopeful and keep fighting every day.
So, if you’ve read this far please consider donating or sharing my story, even one pence will make all the difference. Thank you so much for reading and have a great day!
