On February 24th I went to take my mom out for dinner for her 55th birthday 5 minutes from our home. Leaving our 5 year old German shepherd, Mika, at home in the back yard due to the great weather. Dinner was great we had a good night. As we came home a couple hours later we notice no usual bark as we entered the house and opened the backdoor to let our dog in. The neighbors who were doing construction had cause a fence board to come loose and gave Mika a way out to explore. We frantically called out for her checking the near by main street fearful for the worst. We found her a few blocks over huddled on the curb bleeding and whining. Took her into emergency and found that she got hit by a car suffered from a major devolving and left arm fracture. Not thinking too much of the initial costs and with the primary concern of the health of our Mika we checked her in and they told us all that needed to be done. It ran us with an estimate of 3500-5200$ for the initial visit. Which we had to pay the minimum amount of 3500$. Our small family that consists of my wife, 2 year old, and 2 month old daughters. They explained that for her treatment we must come in every other day weekly to check her wound and fracture. We complied and came in for the first visit a day after discharge. It came to a total amount of 348$ for the follow up visit. Immediately went in and tried to get a second opinion at our regular vet and requested for a billing consult in any places that would offer financial support for cases such as ours. Doing the math of the 8-10 week healing process coming in 3 times a week for even just the minimum 8 weeks would run 8,450$ plus the initial 3500$ which even to a 2 income household is insanely expensive. Our pet Mika though a dog is still family. She is considered our first child and the thought of our inability to afford her treatments and option being brought up by the vet to "surrender" her was devastating. I'm not one to ask for assistance from others but it's gotten to the point that we are in a state of desperation. From the phone consultations of what "surrendering" her would mean to the humane society ultimately would end up in her being euthanized. We have tried to get some compensation of our neighbors but to no avail due to the inspection of the fence board and their denial construction did not cause the fence board to fall but blamed it to weather and poor fence condition. Our fence has been re fortified since we had a storm just a year ago and have survived 2 other major storms with no damage. We would love to take this matter to court but fear the potential to be more indebted in our pursuit and would rather put that money into Mikas current treatments. Our 2 year old loves Mika as do we all and would appreciate any and all support we can to avoid the need to consider surrendering her.
