Our Story
If I don't pay my mortgage payment within the next couple of days, I could lose my house. I've got a refi in the works, which will eliminate my debt and make my monthly payments reasonable. However, due to my ex filing a frivolous lawsuit against me last summer and him suddenly stopping paying monthly child support payments in November, I became overdrawn in my checking account. That led to  Bank of America charging me an astonishing amount in overdraft charges (more than $1K) because they compound — an additional $35 is charged every three days you are late. To make the refi go through, my daughter Mariana and I saved every dime to pay the mortgage, and then, at the exact moment we were going to pay it, Bank of America raided our joint account and used her paycheck and mine to pay down the delinquent account. Apparently, that's legal, although it obviously shouldn't be. (Word to the wise: If you have overdrafts in one account, do not save any money in other accounts at the same bank!)
