In Loving Memory of Karen Valdivia

I met Karen when we were just kids in 5th grade. Neither of us knew then that we were about to meet the person who would become our safe place, our constant, our chosen family. From that day on, we grew up side by side.

Karen wasn’t just my best friend — she was my better half.

We went to the same high school, commuting every day on the bus from Little Village to Lane Tech, half-asleep but already laughing about everything. We shared lunches, secrets, heartbreaks, and dreams. Sometimes we even ditched school just to make memories that would last forever.

We came out to our parents together. We talked through our upbringing together. We figured out who we were — together. We were literally one.

We danced together. Performed together. Traveled to new cities together. Graduated together. Every major chapter of my life has her standing right beside me.

We were supposed to grow old together.

Last night, Karen tragically lost her life in a horrific car accident. The pain is indescribable. It feels like losing a part of my soul.

Karen had a light that couldn’t be dimmed. She loved loudly, laughed fully, and made everyone around her feel safe and seen. To know her was to be blessed.

Her passing was sudden and unimaginable. Her family is now facing not only overwhelming grief but also unexpected funeral and burial expenses. We are asking for support to help honor her life with the dignity, beauty, and love she deserves.
