The Sanson Foundation
A few months ago my wife and I had the opportunity to open our home to foster a wonderful and sweet Pit bull named Mavis. Like most shelter stories, specifically relating to Pit bulls, Mavis was overbred for her puppies and then dumped on the street when she unable to further produce. For most of her life, she has known nothing but being used, neglect, and abandonment.
We fostered Mavis for about three months and really got to see her personality emerge in that time. We discovered that she loves to hoard toys in her crate - taking them out of the toy bin one by one until they were all surrounding her with a goofy grin on her face. She loves to sunbathe and roll on her back in the grass. Seeing her finally getting to enjoy the little things was heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time.
When she got adopted, we couldn't have been happier. The family that took her in was incredible and they had a male dog who Mavis got along with perfectly. Sadly, a past like hers does come with unknown issues and after the 4th of July, her behavior started to shift. We knew she had issues with thunder but her adopters believed that the fireworks set her off and amplified her anxiety to a place of no return. They couldn't leave the house for 5 minutes without Mavis breaking out of her crate and becoming destructive with their belongings in the home. Her separation anxiety continued to grow and unfortunately, after 2 months, they decided to bring Mavis back to the shelter.
Knowing what she has been through these last few months, its not too surprising that she suffers from separation anxiety as shes never had a family to call her own and never knows if when someone walks out the door - if that will be the last time she sees them.
Mavis is one of the sweetest and easiest dogs we’ve ever met and it breaks our hearts to know that she is back in the shelter, but in reality, we know that she needs the help of professionals to overcome the fears that she has developed from her experience in order to find her forever home and family.
We are so fortunate to have gotten to know the dedicated trainers at The Sanson Foundation who run a program that pulls dogs like Mavis from shelters and rehabilitate them for adoption. After meeting Mavis, it is clear that she is a perfect candidate for this program - but she needs our help to get there.
The rehab program cost is $2,500 and every dollar donated to this fund will go directly to The Sanson Foundation to help Mavis get out of the shelter and into the hands of people who can help her attain what she won’t be able to without our help - her own family. They have state of the art facilities and well-educated trainers who really care about the dogs. Please check them out here. (https://www.thesansonfoundation.com/)
Mavis has been neglected and let down most of her life. She needs to know that not all humans are bad and that are people out there who do care about her. Please help us get Mavis the life she deserves.
We appreciate any amount you are able to contribute. Thanks in advance
Thank you
