3 weeks ago, our sweet dog Mae — my daughter’s best friend — was shot by our neighbor with a .22 pistol after she approached his chicken coop. Mae is only 3½ years old, full of love, and so important to our family. We never imagined something like this could happen.

At first, we thought she might pull through. We spent $2,500 on emergency care, medications, and tests, hoping she would recover. But her condition has gotten worse. Mae has now developed a serious infection (E. coli and staph), and the vet recommended a CT scan — which cost $2,700 — to see the extent of the damage.

The results were devastating. Mae has bone fragments and pieces of the bullet inside her. The infection is spreading, and the vets told us that the only way she can survive is with surgery to remove the shattered bone and the bullet fragments. This surgery is estimated at $5,500.

We are heartbroken. Mae is such a young, vibrant dog, and she means the world to my daughter. The thought of putting her down simply because her medical bills are so high is devastating.
