Save Los Campos

Hi, this is Steven Haskett, I'm a part time resident of Austin, TX and Guanajuato, Guanajuato. Wonderful meals by candlelight in the heart of Guanajuato. Local produce, local wines and spirits put together by Michael Dunlop, who after years of working in the high-end restaurants of Banff, made the move to Guanajuato to start a family, and Los Campos. In the original vision there was to be food, wine and spirits, and an adjacent wine shop (Michael is a sommelier.) The original location was on Alonso, where I met Michael and Rocio. The food was excellent from the beginning, but the promised liquor license was in permanent limbo. He pulled up stakes, and moved to the current location off of Plaza Barratillo. The location came with a liquor license, and enough space for the restaurant, which rapidly rose to #1 on Yelp and Trip Advisor. The wine shop would have to wait a few more years, as the location was too small. Los Campos Vinos y Destilados opened earlier this year on Potrero, after more than a year waiting on a liquor license. After years of work, the dream was realized. You know where this is going. Within the last two months, the town of Guanajuato has shut down. The government has banned liquor sales. Downtown has been closed to traffic. There's no one reading the Yelp reviews. By Mexican law, Michael is required to continue paying his employees. Rent is still due. CFE, the national electric company, is not extending any grace to customers. Suppliers, including those local specialty food and drink providers cultivated by the restaurant all need to be paid. Los Campos tried opening this week, with minimal seating  - and there was not a single customer. The virus will run its course, but what will be left? I can't imagine Guanajuato without Los Campos, a gathering place for expats, locals, artists and performers, and an outstanding experience for the guests I bring into the restaurant, who leave full of memories of the magic taste of Guanajuato's iconic Los Campos Restaurant. Will Los Campos be there when people venture out again? It appears to be up to his friends, family, and customers (but I repeat myself!) to decide. The need is immediate. Everyone in the supply chain is suffering, there is no one that can pick up the slack. In order to have another evening at Los Campos with friends in the future, we have to support Michael now. I've started this fundraiser to support Michael directly, and indirectly his family, his employees and their families, and his suppliers and their families. With the exchange rate currently at better than 24 pesos to the US dollar, even a $50 donation will go a long way, and will give relief and show appreciation to the all that are involved in the Los Campos experience. All funds raised by this GoFundMe campaign will go to Michael. Please join me in supporting my good friend Michael with a generous donation and encouragement. And when you next see me in Los Campos, let's raise a glass to celebrate that we made it through this crisis together. Salut!
