In August 2024, the people of Niger were once again met with devastation. This time, massive flooding across the country forced more than 353,000 people from their homes and washed out roads. In 2021, the United Nations rated Niger as the least developed country in the world. Now, with entire communities wiped out, including crops and livestock, people are desperate and hungry.
I am Nigerien, and came to the US 30 years ago with my American wife, who served in Niger as a Peace Corps volunteer in the 90’s. My people, my family, are Tuareg nomadic pastoralists living in the Sahel region of Niger. This flood has been catastrophic for them. They are in need of food to survive. We have sent them money of our own, but we alone cannot support the whole community of 80 people to help get them adequate food and basic supplies. They have lost so much because of this flooding, including their livelihoods - they are camel herders and raise goats and sheep to sell and eat. Their animals have been swept away in the floods.
I am looking to raise funds for my family, a beautiful Tuareg community in dire straits. All money received will be sent directly to this community so that they may buy food, which they will need if they are to survive.
Thank you so much for considering this plea. By contributing, you will not only be saving lives, but helping to keep alive this tribe of people who still live as their ancestors did hundreds of years ago.
Thank you!
