Our hearts go out to all those affected by the powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10, causing severe damage to buildings and forcing evacuations. As of early Tuesday, there are a reported 200 deaths and thousands remain missing as search and rescue operations continue for people trapped beneath the rubble.
World Food Programme (WFP) is on the ground in Colombia and preparing to provide assistance to families who have lost their homes and livelihoods. This crisis compounds food insecurity in the region, where many are already experiencing high levels of hunger. WFP has the reach, scale and logistics capabilities to assist affected families. They have food stocks already available in-country and the capacity to provide both food and cash-based assistance as needs are assessed.
WFP has operated in Colombia since 1969, providing lifesaving food and cash assistance to communities affected by conflict and climate shocks. In the past year, WFP has assisted 1 million Colombians and will continue to provide much needed, critical support during this time of crisis.
