Lindy’s isn’t just a diner; it’s a piece of Albuquerque’s soul, inside the landmark BLISS BUILDING, proudly standing along historic Route 66.
The BLISS BUILDING has been a staple of Downtown Albuquerque at 5th and Central since it was built in 1905 and has remained a part of the look and culture of the neighborhood since the days of the old west. Named for Zenas H. Bliss who was active in developing and building the Downtown Albuquerque we know today.
Unfortunately time has taken it’s toll on the property as it is in need of serious repair to avoid condemnation or even demolition. PLEASE HELP PRESERVE THIS HISTORIC LANDMARK THAT IS A PART OF ALBUQUERQUE'S HISTORY.
For generations, families have come together at LINDY’S, sharing meals, stories, and memories that stretch back decades. Opening in 1929 (as the Coney Island), it’s where grandparents took their kids, and those kids grew up to bring their own families. It’s a place woven into the fabric of this city. The building has been a part of the Downtown Albuquerque community beyond just Lindy's: Hale Shoes, Everitt Jewelers, the Elgin Hotel and countless other businesses have served our community in the Bliss Building over the last century.
Now, they need our help.
Lindy’s has been forced to shut down after the 121 year old Bliss Building was deemed unsafe by the City of Albuquerque. This beloved, family-owned business and property are now facing an uncertain future. The building has been iconic in Albuquerque's look for decades, the Bliss building and Lindy's diner have been featured in countless films and shows filmed in Albuquerque including Better Call Saul, Roswell NM, and The Goldfinch, and losing it would leave a hole in Albuquerque's Downtown Core that would not be filled.
It would be a shame and a huge loss if downtown Albuquerque’s past and culture was abandoned, or worse, torn down during the celebration of Route 66's centennial and the classic architecture and Americana that makes us special; but this isn’t just about a building. It’s about preserving a tradition, a gathering place, and a business that has always shown up for its community.
Year after year, the family behind Lindy’s, the Vatoseows, has fed us, laughed with us, and for many employed us. They have always given back to the community, helping those in need with a warm meal or employment whenever it's needed. Their generosity has touched countless lives and created countless memories.
They’ve given their whole lives to Lindy’s and this community, now it’s our chance to give something back.
We’re asking for your help to:
• Repair and preserve the look and history of the BLISS BUILDING in downtown Albuquerque and Route 66.
• Support the Lindy’s family during this unforeseen closure and the expenses entailed with closing the area around the building.
• Give them a fighting chance to reopen and continue serving Albuquerque as they have done for a century.
Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference.
If the BLISS BUILDING and LINDY’S have ever meant something to you — a meal, a memory, or the way they’ve given back to this city — now is the time to stand with them.
Let’s come together and #SAVELINDYS #SAVETHEBLISS
