I’m creating this “GoFundMe” to help my mother receive surgery needed to preserve her ability to see light and shadows, and to not live in utter darkness for the rest of her life. Linda Faubus was born in 1960 as a premature underweight baby. As a small child, she was diagnosed with “retinopathy of prematurity”. ROP affects blood vessels in premature babies' eyes. Infants with more severe forms of ROP face a serious risk of blindness. My mother was one of those babies. I grew up with a legally blind mom. She is 100% blind in one eye and has been legally blind in the second eye for many years. The low vision she has had in one eye has worsened over time. On Vovember 28 of 2023, her macula suddenly detached and retina has mostly detached. There is no recovery possible for what she has lost, no technology that can repair this detachment. She can still see some light and shadows, but her vision is mostly gone and won’t return.
She is past the point of emergency, because it has already detached. She will have surgery next week to hopefully preserve the light and shadows. The surgery does come with risk that she will lose it all, but it’s also 100% certain that she will lose it anyways. This is life-altering and devastating for us. Please keep her in your prayers, that she will be at emotional peace about this and that the doctors can save her ability to see light and shadows.
The down payment for this surgery is $4,000 up front. The grand total will be over $20,000 which she will make payments on. She is not covered by Medicare due to a technicality. If she does not get this surgery immediately, the retina will completely detach and she will live in darkness for the rest of her life.
