Please help preserve this historic institution from disappearing from Lewisham.
Ladywell Gymnastics Club is a gem at the heart of the borough's community.
Sadly, the club will struggle to survive the COVID-19 pandemic that we all find ourselves within. With its sole income coming from members' fees and having had to close following Government guidance, the club is in danger of going under.
Ladywell Gymnastics Club has a rich history lasting no less than 53 years and has survived many previous challenges, including having to move venue three times.
LGC welcomes 660 members per week - 34,320 per year. The club has produced many successful gymnasts including:
Suzanne Dando (Olympian & TV Presenter)
Avril Lennox (Olympian OBE) Yvette Austin (News Presenter & International Gymnast
Yvonne Mutridge (Olympian)
Courtney Tulloch (Present World and Olympic gymnast) was passed on by LGC to a Men’s Artistic Club
Simone Ming (World Champion, Callisthenics)
Bryony Gill, Alice Davidson, Antonia Patterson (UK University Cheerleading Champions)
Ella Ross Jessop (British Espoir championships - Floor & Vault Finalist) Many Invitational International & Regional Champions and Medallists
The club has also won or received awards for loyalty, community commitment and achievements from Her Majesty the Queen, Mayor of Lewisham, British Gymnastics & London Gymnastics.
From the founder of the club to date, eight generations from three different families have worked at the club. Some of the current staff have been part of the club as gymnasts and staff for 35 years. But now, five full-time, five part-time and many volunteers stand to lose their jobs.
The club is hoping for a rent holiday from Lewisham Council to help ease the pressure. If the club receives the 80% wages announced by the Government, it will help the full-time staff. However, even with these measures it is unclear if the club will survive at all.
Any funds would help the club's staff get through this period and look to rebuild the club on their return.
Gymnastics is a sport that has proven benefits for all, important life skills, discipline, focus, mental & social well being. Ladywell Gymnastics Club has proven its survival strength over the years, and it’s a necessity in our community. It is a fully inclusive club.
We cannot allow 53 years of Lewisham History to be lost.
This time is challenging for us all, but any funds you can spare will be a lifeline for the club and its staff and will be gratefully received.
Thank you
