Save Ky'Mani's Sight

Donation protected
My name is Sarah Greene-Thompson and I am asking for any possible assistance that can be provided by you for my son Ky’ Mani.

My 10month old son Ky’Mani Thompson had been diagnosed with a condition called Retinopathy of Prematurity about 5 months ago and it is unsure how much vision he has, if any at all.

What Is Retinopathy of Prematurity?

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an eye disease that can happen in premature babies. It causes abnormal blood vessels to grow in the retina, and can lead to blindness.

Retinopathy of prematurity makes blood vessels grow abnormally and randomly in the eye. These vessels tend to leak or bleed, leading to scarring of the retina, the layer of nerve tissue in the eye that lets us see. When the scars shrink, they pull on the retina, detaching it from the back of the eye. Because the retina is a vital part of vision, its detachment will cause blindness.

He was born at 29 weeks at 1.365kg and was in the Neonatial Unit of the San Fernando General Hospital for approximately 1 month. During this time he was given oxygen amounts many other treatments to help him survive. After being discharged from the hospital he was sent to the San Fernando General Hospital to conduct a routine Eye Examination, which should have identified if he had ROP but he was cleared and discharged. After about 2-3 months noticing that he was not focusing on objects as he should I took him to an Ophthalmologist where it was confirmed that there were abnormalities in his vision. On returning to San Fernando General Hospital the test was redone and it was found that he had Retinopathy of Prematurity, Stage V, which is the most severe and needs urgent surgery to salvage his vision.

He was seen by a Retina Specialist at the hospital, who after screening him refused to perform the surgery because he believed that the damage is to far along to be rectified and may cause further damages and scaring. This entireprocess has been emotionally challenging for my family.

The head of the Ophthalmology Department at SWRA referred us to Dr. Adina Berrocal at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami Florida who specializes in Infant ROP. I have secured an appointment and is currently in the process of fund raising to cover the cost for surgery and travel expenses that may occur.

My family and I are pleading for any assistance that can be afforded by the company to help us save our son’s sight.
