TSYS School of Computer Science is raising money for cancer treatment of Kondwani Mphande.
Kondwani’s Story:
Kondwani Mphande is our beloved former student at TSYS School of Computer Science in Turner College of Business. He graduated with an MS degree in Cybersecurity Management with a high GPA (3.55) in Spring 2024. Kondwani is an international student from Malawi, Africa. After graduation, he applied for OPT to work in the US and is waiting for OPT approval at USCIS. Due to his excellent academic performance and his outstanding work ethics, Kondwani has been offered a lecturer post in our department. However, Kondwani is unable to have any job or any health insurance until his OPT is approved.
Kondwani started to feel sick during the Spring 2024 when he was still a student taking 3 courses. At that time, he was also employed as a graduate assistant in our department and helped with administrative work. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in June at John B. Amos Cancer Center. According to his doctor, he would need 6 rounds of chemotherapy. By this time, Kondwani had to spend all his savings on various medical tests that were required for his diagnosis. Thus, he has no money to start his cancer treatment.
After the diagnosis, Kondwani tried to find financial help that he needs for his treatment from various organizations with the help of a financial advisor at John B. Amos Cancer Center. However, because of his visa and OPT status, he has been unable to find any help.
Meanwhile, his cancer has spread, and his health is deteriorating at an alarming rate, underscoring the need for immediate treatment. This GoFundMe account has been set up to raise funds for Kondwani’s chemotherapy treatment. The hospital gave an estimate of approximately $1500 per chemo session to begin with. Due to lack of financial funding, his chemotherapy has been halted for more than 2 months now. Any further delay will diminish his chances of survival.
Kondwani has been an asset to TSYS School of Computer Science, not only because of his excellent academic performance and his strong work ethics, but also for his kind and helpful nature and his infectious smile. Kondwani, known as Ko in our department and college, has an incredible power to smile in the face of any adversity. He has been smiling through his agonizing journey of cancer.
We want to keep Kondwani’s smile alive. We want to fight his cancer away. We need your help in this collective fight of ours. Please contribute to this GoFundMe account, so that Kondwani can start his treatment as soon as possible, get rid of cancer, and continue to touch our lives with his kindness, empathy, and his brilliant, warm, beautiful smile.
