Save Kilkee Cliff Walk

Uisce Eireann are proposing to build a sewage treatment plant on the world recognised most scenic tourist attraction to visit in the area as voted on Trip Advisor “The Cliff Walk” in Kilkee, Co. Clare. This sewage plant will have open tanks of sewage and the site is located just 100meters from the walk on Dunlickey Road. The plant will be only primary treatment of sewage, meaning solid matter is filtered from the sewage and shipped to Limerick by truck and treated or incinerated. Then the Raw untreated effluent left over will be pumped out over the cliffs, just 50meters from the Dunlickey Road. If this sewage plant is built on Dunlickey Road the Cliff Walk will be irreversibly damaged and will change the visual landscape forever. Under the Waste Water Directive this plant does not meet the EU standards before it’s even built. If the plant has any electrical or pump failures its design is to release sewage into the Victoria Stream which flows onto the Kilkee beach, which will result in closure and loss of the Blue Flag status.
We are a group of Residents who strongly object to this proposal and believe Kilkee deserves a better alternative. We are not alone in this view The Clare County Council also rejected planning permission for Uisce Éireanns proposals. After 1700 people signed a petition against this project, 88 submissions to Clare County Council planning objecting, Bord Pleanalas inspector recommending rejection of this project An Bord Pleanala granted planning anyway.
We are taking the matter to the High Court and we are asking you to support our challenge.

We want a waste water treatment plant which will solve the needs of Kilkee.
  • A Tertiary plant meeting the standards of the European Waste Water Directive and have capacity for future growth.
  • In a suitable location which will not visually impact on the beautiful landscape.
  • Designed so it will not risk pollution to Kilkee beach.
  • One that will not use the Victoria stream as an overflow when the system fails.
We demand the best for Kilkee!
Please donate whatever you can, all support is really appreciated. Thank you!
