Save Kano: Our Gentle Giant Needs You

Please help us help Kano. We rescued Kano back in 2021 from the Humane Society and he has been a member of the family ever since. He is the sweetest boy in the world. He gets along with everyone from kids to cats to other dogs, and anyone who meets him instantly falls in love with him. He is the definition of a gentle giant.

Kano unfortunately had a fall and his hip looked injured so we got him in right away. They did an exam to include an x-ray to check his bones for breaks or fractures, a fine needle aspirate, and they manipulated his leg and hip area. Everything came back clean—no hip displacement or breaks, and no signs of pain or discomfort. They had no answers for us other than he seemed okay, but they agreed his hip looked odd and chalked it up to swelling.

We let some time go by because he did seem fine. He was still eating and playing with no signs of discomfort but it still looked swollen. I reached back out to our vet multiple times and expressed concern that it still seemed 'swollen,' and they ultimately suggested we follow up with a specialist. So, I reached out to an orthopedic specialist and got him in this week. This is where the completely unexpected happened—orthopedically, Kano is absolutely fine. We learned the devastating news that our boy has a Soft Tissue Sarcoma or an STS. They stated that with the location and size of the mass, removing it was possible—but to be prepared for an amputation.

We received a quote from the soft tissue specialist, and on the low end, it will be $5,500.00 but to be prepared for upwards of $10,000.00. The lower end of this quote is for required pre-surgical workups such as a more informative biopsy, abdominal ultrasound, and CT scan, and having the tumor removed. The higher end is the pre surgical work up plus if they are not able to get clean margins due to the size they will then need to amputate his back left leg.

A positive thing that has come from this most recent visit is his chest x-ray is clear, which means it has not moved into his lungs, which is the primary organ it migrates to if it has spread.

We have also reached out to Planned Pethood International to see if they are able to help our sweet boy.

Kano is the absolute sweetest boy and such a big, important part of our family. There is never a good time for news like this, but it also happens to fall at the same time we've had to make the very difficult decision to put down his big sister. Our family can't handle losing two family members within weeks of each other. We are trying to do right by both of them. His sister has lived a very full, happy life, but she is showing all the signs of it being time, and we accept that and want to give her a peaceful passing. Kano, however, has so much life to live and so much love left - he is only 4 years old. Our family would appreciate beyond words if you are able to help us help him.

If you're able to donate, we are so thankful—but if not, we appreciate any thoughts, prayers, and shares of our fundraiser.

Thank you.
