Save Jef & Susan with a house downpayment
Hi. We're Jef and Susan, and we're humbly asking for your help to keep a roof over our heads. Whatever you can give us toward a downpayment will help tremendously.
We're a couple in our 60s, close to retirement age but not able to retire – and both self-employed. We both work more than full-time and do our best to stay afloat. Jef Gunn is a professional artist and carpenter, and Susan Buhler is a licensed acupuncturist, both well established in our Portland and Milwaukie communities.
We are at a critical moment in housing. The lease is up in June, the landlords are selling, and in the seven years we’ve been renting here, house prices and rents have risen at crazy rates. We are now poised to buy the house we’re in because it's our best option, even with the repairs it needs. We are pre-approved for the home loan and have good credit. There's no question that we can pay the mortgage - we just need help for the down payment and closing costs.
So we’re ready for the party, but we haven’t a way to get there – and we're running out of time. We've spent months looking for other affordable homes, under the promise from a relative for help with a downpayment. But recently that relative has had to withdraw the offer, right when we are most in need. We're now completely out of options. That's where you come in.
Not only have we called this place home for the better part of a decade, it's Jef's place of livelihood. His professional art studio is part of the home and is necessary to keep Jef working, since we can't afford a separate rental studio.
We are asking for donations that will add up to a down payment on this home. There are also issues with the house that need attention soon, so we’d like to have some money left over to take care of these. To bring our monthly payment down closer to what we are currently paying, and take are of these important house problems, we need $60 – 80,000. We understand that's a lot to ask, so we're starting with the bare minimum of $36,500. We have a deadline of May 1st.
