Four days ago, Jacky Chan, a two year-old cat, gave birth to a litter of five kittens. Although the kittens are doing well, since then Jacky Chan has been sick and has developed a life-threatening condition called Pyometra. The treatment that can save her life is estimated at around $1700 CAD.
Who Are You?
We are Peter and PollyAnna, and we regularly work with local animal rescues to foster kittens. Jacky Chan is our nephew Sydney's cat, and we've agreed to finance the surgery that she needs. We've reached out to local rescues to see if they could help, but they're currently experiencing a funding crunch and can't take her.
What is Pyometra?
Pyometra is a life-threatening infection in a cat's uterus. This article is a good resource about it. Without swift treatment and antibiotics, it's certainly fatal, especially when it's progressed to this point.
The treatment is an ovariohysterectomy, more commonly known as a spay. The veterinary surgeon will remove the uterus and ovaries, taking the source of infection with it. She will also need a course of antibiotics and IV fluids. Unfortunately, because of the pyometra, this operation is more complicated than a standard spay; hence, more expensive.
How will the funds be used?
The funds will be used to pay for the operation as well as the necessary medications. In addition, while Jacky is sick she will not be able to nurse her kittens, meaning that they will need to be bottle fed with kitten formula, which isn't cheap. The funds raised here will be put towards the care of her kittens.
In the unlikely event that we raise more money than we need to take care of Jacky Chan and her babies, the remaining funds will be put towards purchasing equipment and supplies for the care of future batches of foster kittens.
