We fell victim to a devastating scam that has left us in financial ruin. These so-called "buyers" of our property and business ran up an unpaid electricity bill of over €12,500, leading to our power being cut. But that's not all, they saddled our company with nearly half a million euros in debt and have left us living in darkness, unable to provide for ourselves or even our beloved horses.
Our story reads like a movie plot, but it's all too real.
For more than a year, these scammers promised, delayed, and lied repeatedly, stringing us along until we were forced to send our horses into livery in October 2023, assured the sale would finally go through. Again it didn't, and now (as of January 22nd 2025) it has been 19 months since we were forced to pack up our lives in a matter of hours, only to be abandoned by these fraudsters.
Since then, our lives have been a nightmare. We've sold everything we can just to survive. Eating has only been possible thanks to the generosity of friends. We've been pushed to the brink, both diagnosed with severe anxiety (update Jan 2025 to PTSD), and I haven’t even been able to visit my horses since April 2024 because I can’t afford the 1,200 km round trip to care for them. Imagine the heartbreak of knowing they need me, and I can't reach them.
We’ve tried to sell our property, but the damage these criminals have left behind scares off potential buyers. And because of the condition of the property with all our worldly goods, we can't leave it either, squatters are a very real problem here in Spain, and leaving would risk everything we own.
I’ve sent over 300 job applications, desperately searching for remote work in translation, proofreading, and editing, but only one response came back, and I didn’t have the equipment needed. The situation is bleak, but I refuse to give up.
This is where I humbly ask for your help.
We need to raise enough to pay off the €12,500 electricity bill (and increasing due to the companies judicial process), restore power to our home, and cover the livery costs for my horses. Your contribution, no matter the size, will help us turn the lights back on, ensure my horses are cared for, and bring hope back into our lives.
If you can't donate, sharing our story might reach someone who can. We’ve been through an ordeal that would make for a gripping documentary or mini-series, involving international financiers, a Gibraltarian banker, a Texan investor, and connections to alleged drug traffickers. It’s surreal, but tragically real, and there are lessons in this that could help others avoid the same fate.

UPDATE September 9th - I just learnt that a judge from the national court in Madrid, has approved and accepted as a criminal lawsuit and not civil. This is a great step forward, but the process is slow, at least many months before we have a hearing. We still need to battle on for funds to assure the welfare of our horses and food on our table.
