Jose Gutierrez passed away on December 5th, 2025. He was 88. It was unexpected. He wasn't alone and he was at home. He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
It's hard to find words. We know he was frustrated with his body and the fact that we know he's free brings us some comfort.
We really miss him. He was the most patient man. He loved his family and friends unconditionally. We never wondered where we stood with him. He loved us at our worst and our best. We love him so much.
He lived so many lives and did so many things. He created a class at UC Berkeley where he graduated with a Masters in Architecture. He received an Honorable Discharge from the US Army. He owned his own construction company until he retired. He was always working on the house until his body no longer allowed it.
His sudden departure has placed an emotional and financial burden on the family. We still need help covering end of life expenses, including funeral and memorial expenses. Our water heater has died and needs to be replaced. We've had no hot water for almost a week. We have immediate car repairs (the dog ate the seatbelts) and the front bumper is clinging on. The house STILL needs what seem like endless repairs. Almost all the windows need to be re-glazed and painted. The back deck needs support beams and dry-rotted planks replaced. Jose's dear friend has been incredible with donating his time to help and guide us with repairs but supplies are still expensive.
We really appreciate any help given. If you've already donated, we are so grateful. Please comment to help us gain more visibility. Share a story about him. Please share with your communities. We know we are all overwhelmed with so much grief in the world and so much need. If you cannot donate, we understand. If you can, no amount is too small.
