Save Hazlewood School

Donation protected
Welcome to our Go Fund Me page, we are parents and carers of the children who attend Hazelwood Community Primary School.

On 2nd October 2025 North Tyneside Council announced their proposal to merge Hazelwood Community Primary School into our neighbouring school, closing the building down completely. Their rationale for this merger is down to ‘low birth rates’ resulting in less need for two schools in the future.

The school was originally shut down due to structural negligence. Hazlewood have been battling, for the last 2 years, to keep the school alive and to continue to provide excellent teaching. Resulting in high educational results. Despite the partial closure the school, teaching team, parents/carers and local community all pulled together to create an even higher engaged team of pupils (if that was even possible!). Hazlewood continued to operate with dignity, professionalism and kept the students at the forefront of every decision, to avoid any impact to their learning journeys.

The treatment we have received from North Tyneside Council has been abysmal. They have given and broadcasted false figures and information regarding the school, to spin a narrative that simply is not true. They have refused meetings with parents and carers, not communicated with us or the teaching staff, not answered questions we have asked or provided any transparency over their motives (selling the land to build houses).

We are protecting Hazlewood and all of the teaching team at all costs, for many reasons:

Hazlewood Education Scores
Hazlewood was in a state of uncertainty, our children were learning in marquees, local library’s and cadet buildings. YET our teachers still made sure the children were safe and education was not impacted. This reflects in the April 2025 Education Scores. Hazlewood scores show 79% of pupils were meeting expected standards for reading, writing and maths. The average scores for North Tyneside are 64%. Coming in at 15% over our local authority average.

Schools Capacity Figures
The councils proposal is to merge Hazlewood with their neighbours, Greenfields.
Despite Hazlewood’s structural turmoil, the school has had the highest intake for their early years.
Hazlewood’s current figures, shows 292 pupils, attending the school.
Greenfields current figures, shows a combined number of 258.
Greenfields capacity is 525 students. Merging both schools would exceed Greenfields capacity, bringing the total number of students to 550!
This being 25 pupils over capacity. Classrooms legally hold up to 30 students. Not only would Greenfields be over ran, this also impacts the upcoming younger generation applying for places, in an already over ran school.

Children’s Mental Health
Our children have had so much upheaval in their Primary School lives already. Due to Lockdown, the school closing due to structural negligence (another impact of North Tyneside Councils cost cutting, when originally building the school) and now facing their school closing and merging into a completely different school setting. These three major events will undoubtedly have a negative affect on the education of our children, which has a knock on affect to their mental health. Now more than ever, they need stability in their education provision. The proposed merger is yet more disruption, instability and unsettling times ahead for the children.

Community Spirit
The merger is also breaking up a community, which the school has so proudly worked towards. Referring to the above events, this has brought everyone even closer together. We understand what the school means to our children, naturally as parents and carers, we want to protect it at all costs.

How can you help?
We can only do so much, we need help from our wider community. We are looking for donations to help us fund legal fees. Every penny will be used to help save our school.

Please help us, show the Council that we aren’t going to just let our school go. A school that has been part of our community for over 60 years, to be replaced with further housing! These are our children, this is our community, we will not be beaten!
