Grace Baptist Church is one of the few remaining historic churches in Downtown San Jose. For nearly 100 years, its ministry has been based in its present building on the corner of 10th and East San Fernando. This historic church's sanctuary now faces the threat of demolition.
From the Great Depression to the Reagan administration to the present day, Grace Baptist Church has served as a center of the community. This all-inclusive church is known for being one of the most progressive churches in the Bay Area. It has relied on its present facilities to serve the houseless, mentally ill, and otherwise marginalized. There are currently plans to demolish the church building in order to build mid-rise student housing.
The demolition of Grace Baptist Church means the loss of a place of worship and a community center. Members of the church are concerned that the church's destruction will impact their ability to serve the community. The church also houses the only remaining theatre pipe organ from San Jose’s silent movie era. Because this historic relic contains antique, intricate parts, we are concerned it could be damaged if it was moved from the sanctuary.
As members of the community, we are opposed to demolishing this church to build more student housing. Any donation, no matter how small, will help save this holy temple from destruction. All funds would be used for advertisements, outreach efforts, possible legal expenses and other expenses related to historic preservation.
Please help us save this beautiful church sanctuary.
