Hello Family, Friends, and friends across the internet who we haven’t had the pleasure of meeting quite yet!
Food Waste is a massive issue.
Every year, 58% of all food produced in Canada along the value chain is wasted. That's 35.5 Million Metric Tonnes of waste, equivalent to 301 CN Towers. The total financial value of this potentially rescuable food waste is a staggering 49.46 billion dollars. From a climate perspective, to produce Canada’s food supply, 42 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents are emitted annually, which means 22.7 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents - 3% of Canada's overall GHG emissions - are emitted for nothing. Despite an overabundance of food production, we as Canadians have dismissed the intrinsic value of food as a source of life-giving nutrition - as 4 million Canadians, including 1.2 million children are food insecure, currently struggling to access healthy food.
We need to start radically rethinking how we value food at each stage of its value chain. These issues need to be addressed - and this is how the idea for Scrapless sprouted.
Scrapless is Canada's mobile food redistribution application that saves good food from going to waste!
Scrapless gives Food Suppliers the opportunity to increase their visibility, add revenue, bring in new customers, and exercise environmental stewardship all by simply not wasting their expected food waste. These Suppliers can include: fresh food markets, restaurants, cafes, delis, and Mom & Pop shops who will be able to promote their near best before date and surplus food products on our application’s marketplace at a discounted rate At the same time, it allows budget-minded individuals (as well as foodies looking for their next favourite place to eat!), an accessible way to discover new affordable meals, snacks, beverages, supplements, produce boxes, and supply crates - which need to be saved from the waste, within their local area.
So how does Scrapless work?
Food suppliers can post their near best before date and excess food supplies by logging into our Supplier mobile application or web interface. On their post, they will list the product, location, price discount, and any dietary information (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, organic, keto, etc.), as well as available times for pickup.
Consumers can then open Scrapless and view all nearby deal postings in their area. They will have the ability to filter results by type of product (meal, snack, beverage, crate, etc), their dietary information, and area. Purchasing is as simple as placing and paying for the order through the application and walking into the nearby supplier to collect their item.
Scrapless is being built to be as intuitive and easy to use as possible for both food suppliers and food consumers - and we have a host of additional features to enhance our user experience down our development pipeline.
Our Team
At the heart of Scrapless is a team of young, passionate, and sustainably-minded entrepreneurs who come from Engineering, Environmental Science, and Business backgrounds. Our hardworking and ambitious team of food savers has been growing quickly! In the past month alone our team has more than doubled in size! We have brought on specialists in a host of different positions across many different portfolios: from marketing, strategy and business development, outreach, to technical development.
In order to prepare for our launch, Scrapless has made a partnership with Enactus Seeder to assist with our outreach efforts. With the partnership, we are actively signing up new food suppliers and developing close relationships with many of them in order to co-create Scrapless to be as user-focused as possible!
We have decided to launch our application first in Vancouver, BC - which is home to many members of our Scrapless team.
Scrapless Needs Your Help!
As we prepare for our Beta launch by the end of this year, Scrapless needs your help! We are asking for $10,000 in contributions. A contribution of any size is greatly appreciated as it will take us closer to our goal. For sizeable contributions, please message a member of the team and we can discuss terms at [email redacted] We will be using the money to build the team, move the next prototype of our application forward, and get other food providers to use the application.
Along with money, The Scrapless team is currently looking to make food-system partnerships that can help our platform grow through meaningful connections, mentorship, and investment opportunity, so we can make a larger impact in Vancouver and eventually other cities across Canada and the United States.
We are all so excited about the momentum we have been making and can't wait to start working with you to save good food from going to waste!
With much appreciation,
The Scrapless Exchange Team.
