Save East Brother Lighthouse: Replace the Pier
Donation protected
I am Tom Butt, president of the 501(c)3 nonprofit East Brother Light Station, Inc. in Richmond, CA. Our nonprofit rehabilitated the 150-year-old lighthouse on East Brother Island 45 years ago, and we have operated it as a bed and breakfast inn ever since, pouring hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours into maintenance as well as millions of dollars from the B&B operation. It has hosted over 70,000 guests over the years.
It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a Registered California Historic Landmark. It is the oldest operating wood-frame lighthouse on the West Coast.
The only access is a 64-year-old pier that must be replaced. Without access, it will be closed down and will soon be destroyed by vandalism, neglect, and weather. We have started a $750,000 capital campaign to replace the pier and gangway, and the goal of this GoFundMe is $51,000 to pay for the prefabricated gangway.
