Hello, my name is Johanna Campos, and I’m reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for help for my beloved dog, Duque.

I rescued Duque in February 2021, during one of the hardest times in my life. In January 2020, I lost my mother, and the pain seemed unbearable. But then came Duque—this incredible, sweet soul who brought light back into my world. In ways I never thought possible, he healed me, showing me love and comfort when I needed it most. Duque quickly became more than “just a pet”—he became family, offering me unconditional support and joy every day.

But now, the one who has given me so much love needs my help.

On December 23rd, just one day before Christmas Eve, Duque was tragically struck by a speeding car right outside our home. It was an unimaginable nightmare. We rushed him to the emergency care center, where we were told that he might not survive the night. His injuries were severe: fluid in his abdomen, a dislocated hip, and a broken back leg. The doctors gave me a heartbreaking choice: euthanize him or somehow come up with $8,000 for his immediate care. The thought of losing him was unbearable, but I wasn’t ready to say goodbye.

Against all odds, Duque fought through the night. On Christmas morning, I was able to bring him home, but the road to recovery is far from over. Duque is a warrior, but the road ahead is difficult and expensive. He’s already been through so much, but his journey is not over yet. He still needs follow-up care, including orthopedic surgery for his leg and possibly his hip, and extensive physical therapy to give him the best chance at walking, running, and playing again.

We have an appointment with his orthopedic surgeon on January 2nd, and after that, we will need to schedule surgery for his fractured leg. The total cost for all of Duque’s care is estimated to range from $16,000 to $22,000—an overwhelming amount for me to handle alone, especially given the holiday season and the unexpected nature of this crisis.

Duque is more than just a dog. He is a companion, a confidant, and a constant source of joy. His spirit is unbreakable, and I am determined to help him heal so that he can run and play fetch again, his absolute favorite thing in the world. The thought of him not being able to run again is heart-wrenching, but I believe with your help, we can make sure that doesn’t happen.
