He walked 40 kilometres... over and over again... trying to find the family who abandoned him.

At first, he was just another shadow on a trail camera.

A young cattle dog. Thin. Limping. Alone.

Locals near Salisbury NSW began noticing him wandering through the bush. Every few days he would appear again, travelling the same heartbreaking 40-kilometre loop, as though he was desperately searching for something... or someone.

Searching for home. Searching for the family who had dumped him there.

No one knows exactly how long Duke waited for them to come back. But for weeks, he kept walking.

Locals left food out. Cameras were set up. Sightings trickled in. Eventually, after four to six weeks of watching this lonely boy survive against all odds, Milly's Search Trap & Reunite Newcastle was called in to help.

But Duke never stayed anywhere for long. Every time we thought we were close, he'd disappear back into the bush.

Then he turned up in Dungog. A few more sightings. Then... nothing.

Roughly eight weeks after he was first seen, Duke appeared again — this time in Clarence Town.

Exhausted. Broken. Injured. Cornered beneath a house with nowhere left to run.

The local Fire and Rescue crew responded and, with incredible patience and compassion, safely secured him. For the first time in what was likely months, Duke didn't have to keep running.

He was rushed straight to the vet.

What they found was devastating. Not only was he tired and hungry, but he had a dislocated hip (likely from being thrown from a car or falling off a ute) which means this injury was 8? weeks old! On top of that, the vets believe he had also been hit by a car sometime in the previous week or two. His other hind leg had suffered a severely ruptured cruciate ligament, leaving him with almost no good leg to stand on.

His body was covered in painful, deep road rash wounds. Not to mention SEVERAL large paralysis ticks!!!

He is just a baby - maybe nine months old. Desperate to survive, waiting for a family that was never coming back.

By every measure, Duke should have given up. But he didn't.

The incredible Ranger Jodie from Dungog stepped in without hesitation, offering Milly's Newcastle the opportunity to care for Duke while he remains under Council's care.

That single act of kindness changed everything.

For the first time in a very long time, Duke has somewhere safe to sleep. He has food. Pain relief. A name. Duke. Named after Duke Street, where his nightmare finally came to an end.

But his journey is far from over and the hardest parts are yet to come.

To save Duke's leg, he urgently needs an FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) to repair the damage caused by his long-standing dislocated hip. He is booked in with a leading board certified Orthopaedic Surgeon this Thursday - July 23rd.

Estimated cost: $3,000–$4,700

His cruciate injury requires major orthopaedic surgery.

Estimated cost: $5,000–$5,800

After that will come months of rehabilitation, physiotherapy, medication and follow-up care.

The reality is confronting.

We're staring down veterinary costs approaching $9,000–$10,000.

No rescue has that sort of money sitting in the bank.

But we also don't have the luxury of waiting.

Every day that passes causes more pain, more muscle loss and more permanent damage. If we cannot get him the surgery he desperately needs, amputation may become the only option.

And after everything this little boy has endured...

We can't let that happen.

Duke never stopped believing someone would come for him.

Now it's our turn to show him what love really looks like.

Every single dollar brings Duke one step closer to running again.

Closer to chasing balls. Closer to feeling grass beneath four healthy paws. Closer to discovering that not all humans leave.
