In September, Draco quite literally ran into our lives, darting into traffic and right in front of my car. He seemed so grateful to be rescued. I took him to animal services for the required stray hold, and then brought him home, thinking it would be a short-term foster situation. He's the sweetest dog imaginable – truly, who wouldn't want to adopt him?
Fast forward almost six months, and he's still here with us. He's wonderful with dogs of all sizes, cats, and children of all ages. He walks perfectly on a leash and is completely housebroken. He's just such a fantastic dog.
Then, this past Sunday, Draco became suddenly ill, and we rushed him to the shelter for emergency care. The shelter vet suspected he'd ingested button batteries or headphones and, sadly, gave him a poor prognosis, recommending euthanasia. Dr. Stacie and I weren't entirely convinced, and I knew I had to give him every possible chance. So, on Tuesday, I officially adopted him and immediately took him to Dallas Animal Urgent Care.
X-rays confirmed there's an object lodged in his system, and it hasn't moved. We're still unsure exactly what it is. We're now facing a difficult choice: expensive surgery or euthanasia. I simply can't bear the thought of putting him to sleep, but the surgery cost is beyond my current reach. So, I'm doing something I find incredibly difficult: I'm asking for help.
