The Dixmont United Methodist Church
The church was built in 1834-35 by Rowland Tyler, a local builder whose only other documented work was the 1812 City Hall in Bangor ' which has been torn down. It is one of Penobscot county’s oldest Gothic churches. It’s a wonderful frame structure using King Post design-wildly used since Roman times. Also on the church property is the Louis Bussey School, built about 1808. It is the only surviving schoolhouse from the period of the town’s early settlement. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 21, 1983.
The church is a local, tangible reminder of the town’s past and its long history. It needs attention now. We need these connections to our history to illustrate that the community remains strong and the historic building , nearly 200 years old is evidence of that strength. Generations of Dixmont residents and nearby neighbors have used this church for many purposes during its lifetime.
The building needs many repairs starting with the foundation. We have bake sales and have funds in the bank , but need donations to help.
Our church has a food pantry. We collect donations for our veterans, have fundraisers for neighbors in need, collect donations for a nursing home and the Cancer Care Center.
We open our doors for Bean Hotdog suppers, dessert nights and card making events. We need to keep this wonderful old building going.
We were given an estimate of 64 thousand dollars to repair the foundation and that is where we need to start.
Thank you for any support you can give.
