Save David's Life - Moto Accident - Medical Bills

David De La Mora was in a terrible moto accident in Isla Mujeres on Thanksgiving night a little after 8:00pm in front of Lomo Bonita coming home from work (he is a waiter at Borracho Burro). Note: He was not drinking. We do not know all the details exactly but it looks like he was trying to avoid a golf cart and a pedestrian on the road and lost control of his moto and was thrown onto the pavement - 1. the handlebar destroyed his spleen and caused extreme internal bleeding in the abdomen 2. his face hit the pavement hard causing a left lateral & base skull fractures (shattered like glass) with significant cerebral infarction/trauma to his brain. After going to the hospital in Isla Mujeres, he was transferred to Quirurgica del Sur in Cancun (recommended as the best trauma hospital in Cancun). He arrived there at 12:30am, and they finally did surgery at 2:30am (waiting for the anesthesiologist). They took out his spleen and dealt with the internal bleeding. He lost his pulse several times during the following 24 hours. He lost 4 liters of blood (80%). They had to go in 3 different times to stop the internal bleeding in his abdomen. Thankfully, now that is fixed, his organs are finally starting to respond and his hemoglobin levels are going up. The next issue is the fluid in his lungs and damage to his brain. Right now, they are telling us that his chances of survival are higher (it was at 15% at one time). However, he will have a very long road to recovery due to the damage to his brain. He might lose the use of his right arm as well as speech & cognitive thinking. We won't know the full extent until he is able to wake up in a couple weeks once the other parts of the body can recover. We are thankful David is alive and his family is ready for the long journey ahead. The biggest problem now are the medical costs he has already incurred as well as the future costs now that we know he will be in the hospital for at least 6-8 more weeks. Due to the extreme costs of the private hospital, the family made the very difficult decision to move him to General Hospital in Cancun. To stay at the private hospital would cost $10,000usd per day minimum on top of the $1,740,000 pesos / $96,668 USD (at 18:1) that were already incurred from Friday-Monday. The Isla Mujeres Expat Community, David's Borracho Burro family, and Tammi at LOMI have been so amazing. David is still in need of blood donations, so please go to General Hospital in Cancun and donate under "David De La Mora Alvarez" any morning if possible. Here is the breakdown as I know it now: Ambulance + Private Hospital = $91,200 usd Donations Total so far = $29,750usd (AMAZING - THANK YOU!!!) Family Payments = $7,500usd LOMI covered his transfer from the private hospital to General Hospital (Thank You LOMI). We still have $53,950usd to go JUST to pay off the private hospital. At General Hospital we honestly do not know how much it will be yet. He just arrived yesterday and they have not given us an estimate of costs, but we know that he will be there for at least 4-8 weeks. For this fundraiser we are starting at $5000 because many people told me to start small and go up since we might not have access to the funds if we started high. The end goal is to pay off the hospital by December 25th so they do not put Gonzalo, his brother, into jail if he doesn't pay (that is the threat). At the same time we will need to start paying the General Hospital bill. It won't be as high, but we expect it to be about $800-$1500 per day. Goal at this time is $60,000 to cover the rest of the private hospital and this 1st week for General Hospital. We truly and sincerely appreciate all your help! I would not wish this experience on anyone. It has been an extremely stressful time worrying about David and the constant threats on his life from the private hospital's billing department. It is a full-time job trying to advocate for David's well-being and health. However, it gives me hope and gratitude that so many beautiful people are coming together to help David. It is humbling and awe-inspiring. Thank you all so very much. Please keep David in your prayers to keep him strong and for him to continue to fight.
