My name is Craig, and this fundraiser is about more than just a business—it’s about a legacy that began long before I was born.
When my mother, Dahlia, migrated to the United States at just 15 years old, she arrived with nothing but hope and an unstoppable work ethic. She was taken in by a family that opened their home to her, and with their support, she slowly began building the foundation for her future. At that time, she started helping at a local ice cream shop in Jersey City, a small storefront that quickly became the place where she learned her first real skills.
That shop wasn’t just a workplace—it was her classroom. She learned how to make ice cream cakes from scratch, how to serve customers with warmth, and how to create an environment where people felt welcomed. Those early years shaped her into the hardworking, resilient woman she would become.
In the early 1990s, while attending school and dreaming of becoming a nurse, she continued working at the ice cream shop. But life took a difficult turn. After having my sister and me, she faced a heartbreaking reality: supporting a family while pursuing nursing school simply wasn’t possible. She made the painful decision to give up her dream and continue working at the shop, choosing stability for us over her own aspirations.
Throughout the late ’90s and into the early 2000s, she became the backbone of the business. Everything was still made fresh, still handmade, still rooted in the traditions of the shop’s earliest days. She devoted more than a decade of her life to keeping that place running, to serving the community, and to building a reputation for quality and kindness that people still remember today.
Then, in 2010, after years of dedication, she was given the opportunity to take over the shop herself. That small store became Dahlia’s Ice Cream Spot, a dream she never expected but embraced with everything she had.
For the next 15 years, my mother poured her heart into keeping the doors open. Winters were brutally slow, summers were spent catching up on bills, and nearly every dollar earned went right back into rent and operating costs. But she never gave up. She kept going because she loved what the shop represented—hard work, community, and family. Every scoop she served carried years of sacrifice, pride, and perseverance.
As I grew older, I joined her behind the counter. She taught me everything: how to make ice cream from scratch, how to talk to customers, how to treat the business as if it were another member of our family. Over time, this shop became more than a business to me—it became our shared dream, a living piece of our family’s story.
What I need now isn’t financial rescue—it's support to help bring the next version of this shop to life. To move forward with this new chapter, I’m seeking help to complete essential store renovations, redesign the interior layout, and furnish the space so it can become a warm, community-centered environment. These updates will allow the shop to reopen with a fresh start, honoring the legacy my mother built while creating a space that feels inviting, modern, and true to our vision.
Your support will help transform the shop into a place where people can gather, relax, and feel at home as we continue the story that began many years ago.
