We call out to Cosette’s community to help them raise funds for a graduate visa in the UK. Cosette is a disabled, non-binary activist, whose family has previously suffered directly under the Tr*mp f*scist regime.
In early 2024, the UK Government doubled the cost of visa fees for all immigrants, including (but not limiting to) the increase of the IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge) to over £1,035 per year in eligibility for NHS Healthcare. Unfortunately for Cosette, being sent back to America at this time would be a de*th sentence for them under the newly proposed laws in the US. With no access to free healthcare or disability benefits, Cosette’s life saving medication alone would amount to over $10,000 per MONTH, not including emergency treatment, needed mobility aids, or regular doctor visit costs. In addition, being a trans queer person currently working and studying as a researcher and advocate in Disability Rights is just another reason on the list Cosette could be in grave danger in returning to America, even as a visitor.
As the UK immigration law currently stands, a graduate visa would allow Cosette access to a two year work visa. This would allow Cosette to stay safe in a country and in a community that they have always considered their second home. They are an extremely passionate and talented individual, and London has provided enormous opportunities for them that they otherwise wouldn’t have had.
In 2017, Cosette suffered a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) from a serious assault and is now permanently disabled. In utter will power and resilience, Cosette has fought homelessness, financial and health crises, and moved to England to seek out a better life in 2019. Since then, they have endlessly fought to remain in London. In 2022, Cosette fled an abusive marriage and unfortunately had lost their visa as a consequence. The two years Cosette spent in America were undeniably horrific, and it was only because of their community in Philadelphia that they survived and made their way back to the UK last year.
Cosette has spent the last decade dedicating their life to building community through music and art as a form of resistance. Through the years they have organized and hosted performances to raise money for specific individuals, or for community organizations. They have often put their life concerns on hold in selfless acts to care for others.
I have personally witnessed the countless times Cosette has been considerate enough to expand their time and diligence for the sake of other people. This has included the life-changing research they are doing to benefit marginalized people—work that could genuinely save lives. Cosette is also a former child prodigy and acclaimed musician who has been featured on the BBC and toured with renowned artists, using their platform to uplift and unify.
Beyond their brilliance, what sets Cosette apart is the deep, immediate kindness they offer to everyone around them. They have helped me with childcare during some of my most overwhelmed moments, despite their own disability—and always with joy, gentleness, and not a hint of hesitation.
Their compassion helped me accept and forgive myself when I didn’t know how. I truly wish everyone in the world had the chance to meet Cosette. Their existence makes this world more bearable, more beautiful, and more just.
We ask for help in any way you can - and we appreciate your abundant kindness.
