Cookie escaped our home and went missing on April 9th. We searched for her for 6 weeks before getting a call that someone graciously took her to be microchipped scanned after finding her nearly dead in a bush. She had lost 8 lbs, had a massive open wound under her arm & had a chronic infection that smelt like death. She was in the worst shape we’d ever seen.

Since then, we’ve been to roughly 5 vet appointments in order to keep track of the wounds healing, the infection and her weight . Everything was looking up (she even gained 3 lbs) and she seemed ready for surgery to close that open wound until our appointment yesterday. Our vet noticed a blue coloring around her wound, traveling up her injured arm. She advised that she’s likely losing blood flow and the tissue is becoming necrotic.

We went over several options , cheap and expensive, including euthanizing her. Our hearts broke at the thought. We just got her back and we’ve barely had any time, and she has so much life left in her-fought so long to stay alive until we found her. We can’t bare the thought of euthanizing her if we can afford an alternative method. Right now, amputating her arm is the financially feasible option. This would include debribing the dying tissue on and around her wound, amputating the leg with necrotic tissue and pulling the excess skin to close the wound.

The past 24 hours have been very emotional for us and our children. The thought of having to lose Cookie under these circumstances are gut wrenching, but we are so thankful for all of the support we’ve received-monetarily & emotionally. We have a consult with a surgeon next Wednesday to confirm plans to move forward and make sure this is a viable option long term. Until then, she will be on 2 antibiotics & a pain medicine.
