Cody has been at Miami-Dade Animal Services for close to two years and is one of its longest residents. He’s had almost no adoption interest and hardly any pawventures. After almost two years at the shelter, Cody’s behavior began to deteriorate due to his long stay. In June, I took Cody out on foster care to give him a break, allow him to be a dog again, and hopefully find him a home.

However, about a month and a half into foster care (7/22) Cody suddenly woke up with a limp on his right hind leg and could barely walk. We rushed him to the shelter clinic, where he was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and simply told to rest for the next two weeks. 5 days into bed rest (7/26), Cody’s leg suddenly began to swell. Within a few hours, his right leg was double the size of his left. This is not a symptom of hip dysplasia. The next morning (7/27), we took him to a private vet because the shelter vet said they could not treat further.

The private vet diagnosed Cody with an infection that turned into cellulitis. We are unsure as to what caused the infection, but the vet speculated it was due to a spider bite or bee sting. Cody was again sent home with medications and told to rest.

However, within two days (7/29), Cody’s swelling had gone from bad to worse. His right hind leg was so swollen that his toes had also swollen and he could not move without dragging his foot on the ground… He was again rushed to the emergency vet.

Now, Cody has been hospitalized for days as doctors and specialists try to figure out what’s going on with him. His care has cost thousands of dollars within just two weeks. And it is expected to continue as doctors continue to monitor and test.

Please, help us support Cody’s treatment. He is a fantastic, athletic, sweet, and loving dog that does not deserve to die after waiting in a small kennel for two years. Cody is fighting for his life and leg, and we want to help him as much as possible.

This big boy has so much life left to live and he still needs to find his perfect forever family.
