Save Cheez Whiz’s Life

Cheez Whiz has been the most amazing kitten. He was a champ right since birth. Overcoming his congenital eye defect, and a major eye removal surgery.

But now things are happening and we have no answers yet.

On September 12, I noticed a massive lump on his belly near his leg & called the vet immediately. I got him in ASAP for an appt.
They weren’t sure what it was so they performed an ultrasound. While doing the ultrasound, they noticed his entire abdomen area was full of dark bruising.
Then they did some X-rays to see if anything was visible.
We had no definitive answers, so we scheduled him for Emergency surgery the very next day…

Sept 13th
I dropped him off for his surgery at 8 am.
He was still running around and playing with his sister in the morning like absolutely nothing was wrong.
& then I got the phone call….

Cheez Whiz had his surgery, and the massive lump turned out to be a significant blood clot. The vets removed the blood clot, and were unable to determine the location of the bleeding, as the bleeding had stopped.
So they closed him up.
During his recovery, he took a very sudden turn for the worse. He had a massive blood clot again, and was bleeding from his abdomen wound and he was going pale fast…
So they quickly put Cheez Whiz back under & performed a 2nd surgery on him.

They opened him back up, and there was so much blood again & a massive blood clot again…

They had other vets scrub in to try and figure out where this bleeding was coming from. But this was extremely unusual to them…
Again. They closed him up without definitive answers, but couldn’t see any issues…

They let him recover and he seems to be doing alright so far. He hasn’t started bleeding again.

About an hour later I get another call from the vet, Cheez Whiz’s red blood cell count is starting to come back up, but he’s not really coming out of the sedation. They gave him medicine to reverse the effects of the sedation and saw no change. He’s very weak, and needs to be closely monitored through out the night…

So now we’re looking at transferring him to a 24 hour emergency vet so that he can be closely monitored & then they may be able to run some more tests on him…

Please…. I am a single momma, and this kitten is my children’s absolute favorite. They will be absolutely devastated if they lose him…

Please share this with anyone and everyone you know…
I will not be able to afford all of this, but I’m willing to do whatever it takes to help Cheez Whiz overcome the odds & do everything to help him survive…

** Updates**
- Cheez Whiz was successfully transferred to Pulse 24 hour Emergency Vet Clinic in Sherwood park.
They declared him as being in extremely critical condition… he was the primary animal being taken care of there overnight.

- Cheezy’s red blood cell count dropped even lower. Normal blood pressure for a cat is 120/80 same as a human and bis systolic (top number) was at 30 instead of 120…. His heart was barely beating.

- So we decided on a blood transfusion.
At about 0130am on September 14th now, Cheez Whiz was about 2/3 of the way done his transfusion, and he was starting to perk up a bit! Thank goodness!

- 630 am - Sept 14th Update
Cheez Whiz became pretty stable throughout the night after his transfusion, his blood cell count is still quite low, and not quite as high as they’d like it to be following a transfusion. But he’s more lively and kitten like.  He ate food the last two times he was offered and his blood pressure has come back up to 131/81!
They said he’s not out of the woods yet, but that he’s headed in a more positive direction! HANG IN THERE CHEEZ WHIZ!

Update at 12:30pm on Sept 14, 2024 Cheez Whiz is looking bright, he’s purring, he’s looking for lots of attention and affection. He is still quite pale, not sure what they looked like last night, but seeing mild improvements after blood work. Going forward - they’d like to collect a little bit of blood and submit to lab to see if he can coagulate it properly, and try to find out what may have caused this. Cheez Whiz is eating great. They have a pressure bandage around his belly due to it still oozing. They’re asking for another $1500 for another 24 hours of critical in hospital care and some fancy blood tests…. To see if he maybe has a blood clotting disorder.

6 pm Update

Cheez Whiz did really well during the day - his gums are looking more pink, not normal yet, but showing improvement. His incision is still oozing despite having a pressure bandage on. Poked him for blood sample. Hematocrit is slowly improving but not normal yet. He has a missing coagulation factor - prolonged Coaguopathy… - hemophilia - Other factor deficiency Worried about life term long prognosis Can’t form clots In reality he’s going to need Multiple transfusions in his future. Provide another transfusion. Not whole blood. More specifiy just plasma $1200 in addition Later down the road, can do blood test to get a more definitive answer. Specific tests. Which factor specifically he is lacking - could be done in the future. If Cheez Whiz continues to do as well as he has been. Once he stabilizes, hopefully the oozing stops, I might be able to take him home soon. Next update will be after the plasma transfusion
Total spent already - $7000
