For nearly 20 years, The Canyon Bistro has been more than just a restaurant. It has been a labor of love, a gathering place, and a home for so many in the Topanga community.
My father, Larry Cohn, opened the Canyon Bistro in 2007, right before one of the most devastating economic crashes in modern history. What began as a dream became something our entire family poured ourselves into, literally. This restaurant wasn’t simply purchased and opened. It was built brick by brick, by hand, with my father and our family physically helping create the space from the ground up. Every wall, every detail, every corner carries years of sacrifice, hope, and heart.
Against the odds, Larry created something incredibly special in Topanga. A place that became a vital connection for this tight-knit community. Through nearly two decades, locals have shown unwavering loyalty, celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, first dates, family dinners, Sunday brunches, and countless ordinary nights that became meaningful simply because they happened here.
Canyon Bistro has always been about more than food. It has been about connection. The live jazz nights, the laughter spilling across tables, the familiar faces greeting one another, the warmth of a place where people felt known. It became a place where community happened.
And behind the scenes, the people who have helped make this possible became family too. Our staff are not just employees, they are an essential part of this story. Their dedication, loyalty, and love for this restaurant have helped carry Canyon Bistro through every season.
But like so many small businesses in Topanga, the last several years have been unimaginably difficult. COVID changed everything. Wildfires, road closures, and the resulting challenges to Topanga’s local economy created hardship after hardship. Despite pouring everything he has into keeping the doors open, my father is now facing an overwhelming reality of mounting expenses that jeopardize the continuation of the Bistro.
This fundraiser is not just about saving a business.
It’s about preserving something that has meant so much to so many people.
If Canyon Bistro has ever been part of a memory for you; if you’ve shared a meal here, enjoyed a jazz night, celebrated with loved ones, or simply believe that independent community spaces like this deserve a fighting chance...we are asking for your support.
Whether through a donation, sharing this story, or simply helping spread awareness, every bit helps.
Thank you for helping us fight to keep Canyon Bistro’s story alive.
