Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
-Margaret Mead

We are the Friends of the Longleaf Pines! We want to tell you about a magical place in Independence, Louisiana. Just a 1.5 hour drive North of New Orleans is one of the last longleaf pine forests in the State of Louisiana -  a real life Fern Gully! The Forest in this area is ecologically unique and a historically special refuge for the plants and animals in the area and a wonderful place for children and adults to enjoy and respect nature.

But the Longleaf Pine Forest in the area have fallen into disrepair.  Parts of the land have been slated for sale, and we are concerned about the destruction of the endangered Longleaf Pine trees and the rare and endangered species that live in it! Please help to preserve this very special place for future generations to come! According to LSU, 95-99% of the  Longleaf Pine habitat has already been lost in the Eastern part of Louisiana (Source ).

Why has the purpose of your campaign changed?

The purpose of our campaign has changed recently due to GSLE, Inc., a Louisiana non-profit, the owner of Camp Whispering Pines advising that they were committed to selling the property and did not want the funds from our campaign.

What are you going to do with the proceeds going forward?

The proceeds will be used towards efforts to conserve the land, trees, and endangered species. With the current state of the Longleaf Pine Forests in the Independence, LA area up in the air at this point, things are currently evolving and changing at a rapid pace.

What will you do with the funds if the current goal is not reached?

The funds that are received will be used toward conservation efforts of the Forest whether we reach our larger goal or not. Our number 1 goal and priority is preservation of the Longleaf Pine Forest.
