NOTE OF THANKS FROM THE FAMILY!
To all of you who, for Cal, sent well-wishes, prayers and so very generous financial support, myself and my family want to extend a sincere thank you. Your support was selfless and kind. Our pup, Cal, is a part of our family like so many of your pets, children or loved ones are for you. He suffered from internal injuries, mostly to his lungs, as well as, brain trauma.
Special thanks to Karen S. for acting so quickly. Karen took control of the accident scene, both mine and Cal's shock and gave Cal a chance to survive. His success is because of her. For me, I have a new friend.
My heart goes out to Becky R. with whom Cal collided while chasing deer. Her heart was broken along with Karen's and my own. But...
Yesterday, Cal had a follow up with WVRC. He's clear! Chest x-ray was great! Blood work clear! He still has a limp but hopefully with time that will resolve itself.
He's a strong little miracle to have survived the trauma he suffered. His survival would not have been achieved without the generous support from strangers, friends and family. My son Joe knows there are good people who give of themselves. Joe's four legged buddy is thankfully still part of our lives. My faith in mankind is renewed. I'm humbled and grateful. Your thoughtfulness is a gift I will always treasure. Cal thanks you. We thank you.
Sincerely indebted,
Grace, Dave, Joe and Cal
FINAL UPDATE! Cal is home with his family today, and that is thanks to all of you! Without your support and getting Cal immediate treatment he would not have made it. We are grateful to those who donated to Mayfair Animal Hospital for his initial treatment and then to WVRC in Waukesha who got him the advanced treatment he needed to heal from his blunt force trauma and collapsed lung. No one wants to be in this situation and I am glad I was there to help and support, and I am so glad you all joined me in doing that.
UPDATE! Cal’s family was contacted by the vet and he is stable and doing well, and the tube is the best option for him right now. They will be able to visit him after 8pm tonight and they will send some photos to update and thank everyone for your generosity. I will keep you updated if I hear anything else today. Thank you again! Keep sharing! You are all heroes!
Economic Euthanasia. Two words no one with a beloved companion animal wants to hear, much less experience.
I was driving home from work on April 19 and saw the traffic stopped in both directions. I assumed it was a wild animal incident until I saw a woman running down the street with a leash. I jumped out of my car and ran over to find the driver and the owner standing over a sweet and cowering 1-year old Lab mix named Cal. He had no obvious wounds, but was painful and shocky. We loaded him into my car, took him to the emergency vet where he needed to be transferred to a specialist. He is now at the Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center in Waukesha with pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and looking at $3-5K in bills without surgery and an additional $4-7K with surgery.
His family consists of a 12-year old boy, who was on the side of the road and in shock himself when this incident occurred. He watched in horror as his dog sprinted from the yard unexpectedly to chase deer. The dad is trying to be a rock for his destroyed son and his wife, who I just found out is also dealing with her mother being terminally ill. This dog is the center of their family and giving them the love and comfort she needs to cope with her knowledge that her mom will be leaving her forever soon.
This family is now faced with the decision none of us want to be in. Do we euthanize a dog that has a good prognosis with treatment because we will be financially ruined? Or do we make that decision based on his prognosis and future quality of life. I want to make sure it is the latter. No 1-year old dog should die because of money.
I tried to get donations sent directly to the vet clinic but they will not take third party donations. I have never created a GoFundMe before despite being in animal welfare for 13 years professionally, and too many years to admit privately fostering for rescues.
I feel that Cal can make it with treatment and I do not want this family to lose their best friend on Easter weekend.
All funds will go directly to the family to cover their vet expenses and any additional funds will go to a special fund at the first Emergency Vet we went to that can help the next family in this position to pay it forward.
Please help give Cal the second chance he desperately needs and please help this family stay together when they need each other so badly.
Together, we can prevent another Economic Euthanasia from destroying a family.
