Brooklyn's Historic Cemetery
Mayor Evans purchased 2 acres of land from the Wiggins Ferry on January 7, 1891. The deed stipulated that this land could only be used for burial purposes. This stipulation made our cemetery the first in the area designated for the burial of Black people.
Our cemetery has been neglected for many years. Overgrown vegetation obscures 90% of the cemetery's 7½ acres. It is unprotected with a fence. As a result, it has been vandalized several times. We need funds to clear the overgrown vegetation, repair headstones, purchase and anchor markers for unknown graves, purchase a fence, and signage. Thank you for your donation.
